Home -> RV-7 and RV-7A topic: dimple vs counter and RTV on the elevators

I am trying to figure out how to best fit the E-616 trim cover plate
to the E-615 reinforcement plate. I am reluctant to dimple the
reinforcement plate since the holes are so close to the edge. A
different approach would be to counter sink the E-616 cover plate but
the metal seems awful thin to do that. What are your thoughts.

I don't see any mention of using the RTV compound to join the
stiffeners of the elevators. Should it be used before closing up the
elevators? Thanks for your input.

Go ahead and dimple it. It will be fine. It is too thin to
countersink for a #6 screw anyway, so that's not an option. BTW, (By
the way), you might want to put a scrap piece of .020 underneath the
flange all the way around. That way, the thicker cover plate will
sit more flush with the skin when it's finished. That's another
trick I've picked up over the years.

Yes, use RTV on both the rudder and elevator stiffiners. The one
place NOT to use it is inside the ailerons. If you use RTV there,
you can't adjust the "squeeze" to fix the "heavy wing syndrome". If
you don't understand that just yet, don't worry. You will eventually
when the time comes.

Hugh

I just did this the other night (after staring at it for 2 hours). Finally
the plan came together after talking to an experienced builder. I dimpled
the screw holes and countersunk the rivet holes for the trim cover plate.
It worked perfectly.
