Does anyone have good research on making this choice? Is auto paint
suitable? Base Coat/Clear Coat best? Does Clear Coat crack/yellow?
There are amazing new finishes from auto makers and from people like
House of Kolor. Then there are really nice S-W paints (they sent me
some great sample pages).

I painted a test panel using base coat, clear coat which is probably the way
to get the best and most durable finish, but is a lot of work. You can check
the steps out on my website at

Forget House of Kolor unless you have a substantial bank roll. Go
price a QUART of their stuff and see what I mean. Some of their
paint is upwards of $600/gallon. That's compared to Imron which is
almost $200/gallon (still outrageous).
I've used polyurethane on my previous two airplanes but I'm going
with base coat/clear coat system this time and so are all the guys I
know that are building again. I don't know if it makes that much
difference who's system you use as long as you use all the products
from a single system. That's a good reason to not prime any exterior
parts now until you are ready to paint.

Thanks Mike! I have had your website bookmarked for a few weeks and
have seen your test airfoil section - nice!!! I wonder how people
get precise curves though. Happy New Year!

Randy, I never heard that before! I should only use, say, Sherwin-
Williams primer with their base coat/clear coat? Does the primer
really matter?

It "might" matter. The last thing you want is to spend $2,000
painting your bird only to have the paint fail to adhere properly
because of a bad primer layer. When painting from bare aluminum,
follow the manufacturer's recommendations for surface prep and
primer. If you don't, you may or may not set yourself up for a
problem. I know that most manufacturer's allow you to paint base
coats over metal etching primer. However, the polyurethanes are much
more sensitive. You're also supposed to apply the color coat within
so many hours of the primer to get the best bond possible.
In all cases, follow what the manufacturer says.

Randy is correct in that it might matter. I know a fellow RV Builder in the Chicago that used an incompatible primer/topcoat and after a few months he went out to his plane and the whole paint job was one big spider crack. It looked like someone had shattered a windshield.
I think his comments are in the Matronics List archives. http://matronics.com/search

Thanks for the replies -
I appreciate hearing about the need to base coat within a certain
number of hours of priming.
To complicate things, an RV6 builder (flying) says he avoids
base/clear coats because clear coats crack or otherwise become
damaged or unsightly. Any comments?
