Home -> RV-7 and RV-7A topic: Trailing Edges

Author: "rv7ly" <ross@...> Time: Mon Dec 31, 2001 7:42 am PST Link

After much frustration and marginal results on my elevators and
rudder, using the "brake" described in the plans, I decided there had
to be a better way. After perusing my steel stock rack, I found a
piece of 2" square tube, some 2x2x1/8 angle, and a piece of 1" square
tube.

I welded the three pieces of angle (about 16" long perpendicular to
the 2" tube as levers, and the 1" square tube to the other end of the
angles as a handle. I then set this at the edge of my assy table on
top of a piece of 1/8" masonite, and clamped 3 gate hinges to the 2"
tube with the long tongue hanging down along the 2x4 stringers of the
table. Then I welded the hinges to the tube, took it back to the
table and screwed the tongues to the side of the table.

It makes nearly perfect trailing edges! I've spent less time making
this and bending my ailerons than I spent with one elevator T/E.

If anyone needs more info, let me know. Hope it helps.

Ross
