RE: Rivets and Bolts

I was working on my tail kit and realized one size
rivet required was NOT in the kit – which of course
frustrated the heck out of me. So I ordered up two
rivet assortments from Aircraft Spruce Company. I
organized them in the 8-bin Avery parts trays (which
are totally awesome) and so I should not have this
problem again.

When the rest of the kit came, once again, I had a
million bags with different size rivets and so I just
dumped the bags into the appropriate bins and labeled
them all. This is the ONLY sensible way to do this.
GET THE RIVETS OUT OF THE BAGS and into labeled bins.
Rivets are a bit intimidating initially but once you
get them organized it’s quite simple.

When you read on the plans that you need a particular
size rivet, it would be ridiculous to have to go first
to the packing slip and find the bag number and then
have to find that bag. Just get the rivets organized
and your project will move along much more quickly.
In my case, had I done this initially, I would not
have encountered three days down time while waiting
for new rivets.

I think the same can be said for bolts. The project
has many bolts and an assortment is certain to come in
handy. Even after the airplane is finished you will
need to maintain it – so having the bolts on hand will
make that process easier. Aircraft Spruce has some
nice assortment packages which are not too expensive.

I almost "NEVER" rely on the plans to tell me what length rivet to
use, only the size and whether it is countersunk or round head.
Everyone should learn to use a rivet gauge and use the right rivet
for the situation. More than once while building the -6, I ended up
drilling out a rivet that was too short because I followed the
plans. Maybe they are more accurate now than they were before, but I
usually don't trust them. When it comes time to rivet, I just pull
out the various trays of rivets and use the one that is the right
length based upon what my rivet gauge tells me.
