Home -> RV-7 and RV-7A topic: Wiring Kit?

Author: Bobby Hester <bhester@...> Time: Sun Jan 6, 2002 6:41 pm PST Link

Ok guys, I'm about to start working on my ribs and I was going to order
the wiring conduit, but was looking at the basic wiring kit. Is the kit
the way to go, good investment? I am putting the Duckworks landing
lights in each wing. What about the Wire harness what is that? For the
engine compartment?

Next what about a flop tube is everyone putting one in or not? I do plan
on doing loops and rolls.

Is there anything else coming up that I need to concider? I am already
putting in the capacitive type senders.

In my opinion, do it yourself. Buy lots of wire and connectors and get every strand the right length, size, etc. As soon as you change something with Van's wiring harness, you are creating more work for yourself. Get a good set of ratcheting crimpers, and 100 feet of various wire, connectors, etc and go to town with it.

You will no doubt order more wire and connectors along the way, unless you just order way too much of everything from the start.

Flop tube is not needed for loops and rolls. Only extended times upside down, and then you will need an injected engine or throttle body. My vote is to skip it. I did, and haven't needed it yet. It is alot more work to put the flop tubes in and is only needed for serious negative acro.

Bobby,

I'm putting in the flop tubes, yes more work but not a lot and I do like to
fly upside down. I have the basic harness kit and I wouldn't get it again at
the wing stage. I might use it in the fuse but for the wings I'd just buy
some wire and put in a conduit. You may want to get the strobe wiring kit if
you have decided on what type of systenm you are using.

I just got the basic wiring kit and discovered that it has the nylon
conduit tube (that I had already purchased separately) and various lengths
of 14-16-18 and some honker 8 and 2 gage cable, a few ring terminals and
spade plugs, and that's it. (No breakers, switches or anything else). I
actually needed a supply of wiring for things like the landing lights and
the Gretz heated pitot so the kit seems like a good set of supplies. But
it is by no means a complete electrical system for an RV.

Add a small L bracket made from left over stiffener to the inside tank
rib. You'll drill a hole in this for a zip tie to lash the capacitance
sender unit close to the BNC connector. A couple of rivets will hold it
fine since the sender wiring weighs less than an ounce, but you'll need to
ProSeal those rivets along with all of the other fittings on the inside rib.
