Guys,
I've been looking at the SL360 powerplant from Superior Air Parts as a
powerplant for the RV-7 and have a couple of questions:
1. Since this is basically a "copy" of an O-360, how do they get
around a lawsuit from Lycoming over copyright issues?
2. Will all Lycoming O-360 parts fit on this motor?
3. Has anyone had any experience with the Cool Jugs water cooled
conversion kit for the O-360? Will this fit the SL360 kit motor?
4. Reality check: what are the insurance implications of using the
SL-360 vs. a Lycoming engine?
FYI: The price difference between the two:
O-360 $21,850 IO-360 $26,995 (direct from Van's)
SL360 $16,990 SLIO360 $17,490
Difference: $4,890 $9,505
Enjoy!

Jeff,
Where did you get your quote for the SLIO-360? My quote for just the
SL360 was a little over 20K?

Jeff,
If memory serves me correctly when I looked into this engine option, I don't
think the $16K price includes the carb, mags and starter. That's an
accessory package that'll run you another $3.5K, or thereabouts. Better
check.

I to am looking into this engine, and so far I think it's the best option. The "SL" version is the kit version of the same motor and the price includes a "Build/technical School.
Just got an info pack with prices, here they are:
Kit
SL O-360-B12A $16,990
Accessory option $3,200
SL IO-360-B1A2 $17,490
Acc. Option $5,500
Assembled Engine
O-360-B1A2 $21,000
With Accessories $23,000
IO-360-B1A2 $23,280
With Acc. $27,280
I'm going with the kit but have not decided on injection or not yet.

Randy,
I pulled the price directly off of the Superior Air Products web page
using the part number listed below.

I just pulled the prices from their site. To compare "apples to
apples", the price of the Superior engine SL360 "assembled and with
accessories is $23,000 as compared to Van's $21,850. The fuel
injected model is $27,280 versus Van's $26,995.
Gotta read the fine print.
Now, if you want to assemble your own engines, the Superior prices
are about the same as Van's only your engine from Van's is fully
assembled by Lycoming technicians. (That may be good or bad, make
your own judgement.)
Bart offers a zero time XP engine using similiar parts and his prices
are about $2K less than the Superior prices for an assembled engine.
My choice is a zero time rebuilt O-360 from Bart for a little over
$17K.

I couldn't agree with you more Randy, I've bought two new engines from
Van's, but after to talking with Bart about his rebuilts, there's just no
question for me. I've got a rebuilt O-360 on order with LASAR, spin on oil
filter, alternator, starter and chrome kit for $19K. Plus it's built to
'new' tolerances with all FAA approved parts, many of which are the ones
Superior Air Parts uses on their XP-360.
The only used parts he uses are the case halves, push rods and lifters.
Everything else is new. Plus it's dynamically balanced.
I guess I sound like an ad for Aerosport, but I think he warrants a 'look
see' when deciding where to get an engine.
