I was thinking of using ribs for the ends of the trim tab rather than
bending the tabs. The reason being that I just like the way it looks
better. Are there any reasons why this would not be a good idea
(other than reducing my speed by .025 knots). As always, thanks for
the input.

I made ribs for mine and it went very well. Looks good and it was a lot less
stress on me! And I didn't have to order replacement parts from Van's!

By all means put the ribs in. I' m sure someone has done it, but I have yet
to see anyone who has bent the tabs on the elevator and the outboard side of
the trim tab and make it look as good as a rib. I've tried a few times
without success. I used ribs this time and am very pleased with the results.

My tab turned into nightmare and turned out so badly I think I will redo the
whole elevator. The bend looks terrible and the gap is worse. I would
caution anyone at this step to be very careful as it is hard to get it to
look right and I started to try and fix it and it really messed it up. Even
the Orndorff tape suggests if you start to get into trouble to put in a rib,
I wish I had listened earlier. It looks like the rib would be much better
way to go and Mitch I wonder if you have any pictures or diagrams of how you
did the rib.

Hugh,

Ribs are fine if you want to go that way.

The key to getting the skins to bend correctly is "NOT" to do what
Van's suggests. I mean, you can get it to work by using the particle
board but it's a lot easier if you just use some bar stock, c-clamps,
and clamp a piece of aluminum bar stock on both sides of the bend
line. Then, bend it over with a flat board. Use the light touch of
a mallet to finish off the bend nice and tight.

Worked like a champ on my two tabs (RV-6 and RV-7A that is)

If you use a finger brake, you can get a perfect trim
tab using Van's pre cut trim tab that has the fold
lines on it.

What is a finger brake and where can you get one? It sound like something
that might be useful for making other small bends.

Sorry I don'y have any pictures. But actually what I did was not really a
rib. After I bent the elevator and trim tab (after cutting off the tabs), I
cut a small piece of 1/4" luan the same shape as the bend and used JB weld to
seal it into place. I recessed it back into the elevator and trim tab skins
app. 1/32". After it set up, I used epoxy and microballons as a filler. I
got a very square installation with a perfect (whatever that is) spacing
between the tab and elevator.

Just my way.

Thanks, I understand that, it sounds like a very good way to do it and I am
sure it will look great when painted. I hate to think of the prospects of
redoing the whole elevator, but mine looks so bad and the gap is uneven I am
sure I will talk myself into redoing it. My wings just came so I put it on
the back burner to think about it for awhile.

MIke,

And to all new builders out there, please, if there is something you don't
like cosmetically, change it before the paint job. Because believe me, no
matter how good your plane looks, YOUR eyes will only see those blemishes.
And they stare at you, taunt you and ask "Why didn't you fix me?" It can be
a continual self-kick-in- the-butt.
