I have two quotes from two different places - both
reputable.
1. Fuel injected IO-360 180HP COMPLETE package -
$23,300 - aerosports in canada "barts" - includes
alternator, starter, mags, constant speed set up - a
complete package.

2. same thing - but rebuilt NON-certified- IO-360 180
HP fuel injected - $16,500
both are Lycoming engines. Is it worth spending
$6,800 more for a certified motor?

3. Superior XP360 fuel injected can bump things up to
$30K and then a new Lycoming can bump it up to well
over $30K.

I'm really close to ordering something here for power
- for one so I can make more decisions about other
stuff - like fuel guage (cannot order until you know
if you are going with fuel injected or non fuel
injected engine).

I've rebuilt a handful of auto engines and know if
they are done right, a rebuilt one is just as good as
a new one. I'm having a hard time convincing myself
that I should spend $6,800 more for one from
Aerosports "Barts". Heck the $6,800 I save would more
than cover the cost of Vans new firewall forward kit
- about $4,200.

any thoughts?

Two things:

Bart's engine is not certified. It is issued with an experimental
data plate and is only good on an experimental airplane. It cannot
be used on a certified airplane.

Since I don't know where you are getting the engine for $16,500 I
can't make a comparison. Just make sure you are comparing apples to
apples. Bart's engine is a zero-time, new log book engine. It is
rebuilt to "NEW" engine tolerances, not rebuilt to "REBUILT"
tolerances, which are less stringent.

Bart's engines are first rate. I met and talked to the man at
Oshkosh last year. He knows his engines and his reputation is very
strong in the flying community. You will get a good engine from him
and if you have a problem, he will fix it.

It has been my experience (for what that's worth to you) that when
you really compare apples to apples, you can't beat the price that
Van's has for a new engine, and you can't beat Bart's price for a
zero time rebuilt engine. You can find engines locally that are
either rebuilt or with some time on them for less money.
