Group,
I've been looking at the lighting requirements for night flight.
I had originally thought that I could put all lights in the wing tip
and be legal. I don't have the wing tip's yet but it looks like the
new tips have been molded so that the lights could be placed inside
the front tip. While I like the looks of this, it does seem to tell
me that I need to have a position light in the rudder of the plane.
It appears that the white position light would not be visible from
behind in the new tips design.
Those that have the tips, does this make sense. Are you putting the
white position light in the rudder fairing?
Thanks,
Doug

If you'd like to avoid a pile of mush - definately put
a light in the rear! One might encounter you at 300
MPS while you are traveling at 200 MPH (like that
crazy guy we had on here last week who wanted to build
an RV which would go 265 MPH) - from the rear and we
might end up with a pile of mush if you don't get your
rear light up! So LIGHT YOUR BUTT! And if your name
were "Dougetta" - i'd say shake it TOO!

Yes, you do need a tail light, I plan on using the combo tail light /
strobe light.

Yes and yes. I'm not sure but you may be able to get the tips without the cutouts and mount some "all in one" combo type lights but I'm doing the 3 nav/strobe light setup.

I'll preface this with, I haven't seen the new
wingtips to know how different they are form 6A
wingtips.
The all-in-one unit with the strobe and nav lights
with a rear-facing white position light in the unit
are legal as long as they are visible from the rear.
This means building up the wingtip location enough for
it to work. A friend's RV-6A had such lights on the
wingtips and he had built up a mounting point with
glass work (they look tremendous BTW). The DAR while
inspecting this RV-6A spoke of the rules and that the
wingtips are only legal if the white position light
can be seen from the tail, in this case it was legal
w/o the light in the rudder fairing. However, my
friend also has the white light in the rudder fairing
but though that was not strictly required. The DAR
spoke of seeing many RVs with the tip lights mounted
directly on the wing tip without a buildup that didn't
pass for the rqmt of the rear position light.
My personal option will be to do both tip all-in-one
lights and a rear light.
