Home -> RV-7 and RV-7A topic: Sealing fuel tanks - a new way?

Author: "Steve Hurlbut" <hurlbut_steve@...> Time: Wed Jan 16, 2002 10:56 am PST Link

Heard an interesting way of sealing fuel tanks today.
Apparently one guy applied the sealant to all the ribs and then clecoed them
in place. He came back a week later and then riveted the ribs to the skin
and applied sealant around each rivet.

Anybody tried this?

YIPES, I got a lot of sealant to squeeze out of those joints when I put those rivets in. I would be a little worried about how well the joint fits together if the pro-seal was already cured in there. Celcoes just don't pull hard enough. I may be putting too much pro-seal in the joints too but my tanks hold pressure and they fit pretty well. Just my $0.02 worth.

Godspeed,
Phil

One MAJOR reason I went with the QB wings was my fear
of building the fuel tanks. Imagine you are all done
with your new RV. You take it down to the airport -
spend four hours putting on the wings and then fill up
the tanks only to find they LEAK! What then - you've
got to pump out 42 gallons, remove the wings, take it
all home and fix the problem and hope next time you
fill the tanks they don't leak - yuck! Sounds like an
nightmere - If you can swing the QB wings I HIGHLY
recommend them.

I can understand not wanting to build the tanks but not from fear of leakage as much as they just aren't much fun. I put 24 inH2O (about 1psi) of pressure in mine and then Snooped them real good (Snoop is a soapy substance made especially for detecting small leaks). I feel pretty confident that they won't leak and if they do it should not be a horrible situation. The worst part will be remvoing them from the wings. (You shouldn't have to remove the wings to get the tanks off, but there are a lot of screws and those bolts are hard to get to.) I have also heard of people who had professionaly built tanks that leaked. These were not Van's tanks but they paid good money for a leaky tank. In conclusion, don't run away from building the tanks because you think they are difficult to build. They are not difficult to build they are just a big, smelly mess that is not any fun.

I am not trying to disagree with Clifford either, I considered having my tanks professionally built as well because of all the horrible things that I had heard about them on the RVList, I just wanted to let people know that it wasn't all that bad. If I ever become a repeat offender I imagine that I'll build those tanks myself as well.

Godspeed all,
