Do any of you have any thoughts on recommended horse
power for the RV-7A. I'm getting really close to
ordering an engine - the deal i'm considering is fuel
injected 180 hp or fuel injected 200 hp for $4,000
more. The question is do I really need 200 hp???
I've heard the RV's with 180 HP are pretty darn fast
and the 200 hp is a real rocket.
Your input would be greatly appreciated especially
those of you who have owned rv's before and are
building a secound or third one. I might want to put
this on floats and end up in northern Maine were I can
only get 93 octane gas - would I encounter more
problems in such a senario with the 200 hp? Can you
just dump octane booster in with auto/boat gas to get
the high octane lycomings prefer?

I have a 180 HP on my -6. I don't think I could
justify the added cost, complexity of injection, fuel
consumption, etc. I get 190 MPH cruise just fine with
a nosewheel and a wood prop. If I were to do it
again, I would stick with the 180. Understand that
the Vne still shouldn't be exceeded, so how much
faster do you want to go? RV's don't do well in
turbulence, so going very fast wouldn't benefit you
that much in the long run, IMHO. I think where you
would get the most benefit is in climb, however a 180
HP does just fine with a fixed pitch, and is even
better with a C/S.

Cliff,
First thought. If you look at Van's estimated speeds for the 180 vs. 200hp
versions of the RV-7, there's really not much difference. His claims and
estimates have been very reliable in the past, so there's no reason to doubt
them now. I had 180 with a Sensenich 83" pitch prop in my RV-6 and it would
cruise at 198 MPH TAS at peak power cruise (75% power at 25 degrees on the
rich side of peak EGT, 10.5 gph) and at 192 MPH TAS at best economy cruise
(at peak EGT, 9.6 gph.)
I'm putting a 180 in my RV-7 with a Sensenich 85" pitch prop. I truly expect
to see a 200MPH cruise. I think that's pretty good and not worth it to me to
spend the extra $ for the 200HP IO-360 which requires a CS prop, again more $.
But in your case, if you are going to put floats on it, I'd suggest you get
as much power as you can hang on the front. The CS prop will help
tremendously in developing full power. Those floats will probably be pretty
draggy, so the extra HP will always come in handy.
That's my view.

My suggestion is to have 10.1 to 1 compression pistons added to the
180 HP Lyc to get about 190 HP out of her and spend the extra money
on a CS prop. That's what Bart is doing for me.

Randy:
Yah but then don't you have to run something like 200
octane gas if you go with 10:1 compression pistons???
I need to prepare for what a typical tiny airport in
Northern Maine might have for gas - like how about if
they only have 93 octane boat gas (I might put mine on
floats)???

Cliff,
If you want to know more about RVs on floats, contact Eustace
Bowhay. His 6 is on floats.
