Well, I seemed to ruffle a few feathers with that one... Jan came
back with some good points, he's obviously done one hell of a lot of
work on this idea. I guess its all in what you feel comfortable with.
Maybe after a couple thousand Subaru-engined aircraft are flying for
a LOT of hours, I will feel better about this. Not being an engineer,
and not having handled one of his engines, I would hate to pour water
on the idea for the rest of you. I agree, from what I have seen, we
are flying 1920's (or worse) technology, and definately need
something better! The only point I would refute is that of the Rotax
engines. Take a trip dwon to your local Sea Doo dealer, and ask them
about Rotax 2 strokes. Dont do it in front of the management, get a
tech who is alone, like at lunch. You will not be flying your Rotax
powered ultralights for long. (This is a little off-topic, but
thought some of you might be interested) On the positive side (yes, I
do have one)Their four stroke singles have been cleaning up in
flattrack racing for years. That said, I'll shut up for awhile,
didn't mean to fuel the pissing contest, just one man's opinion. Kyle

The 912 and 914 engines are 4 strokes.

Kyle,
I thought your message was well written and raised questions about
how appropriate a Subaru engine is in an airplane.
I've been just as sceptical of the Jan Eggenfellner effort and have
raised a number of questions on the Subaruaircraft forum about the
single ignition system. But in each case Mr. Eggenfellner has
responded straight forward and was able to cause me to adjust my
thinking somewhat. He is no dummy and believes in what he is doing.
