Home -> RV-7 and RV-7A topic: VS-405 lightening hole

I have searched but can't find anything about the stamped but uncut
hole in VS-405. From looking at pictures of assembly on builder
pages it looks like most don't drill out this hole. Its size is too
big for a unibit and too small for a fly cutter. Is it worth the
effort to try to figure out how to do this?

I feel much better about this building process now that the HS is
done. Steep learning curve for me.

I cut mine out with a circle cutter. Someone on the list said this was
related to the 51% rule. Maybe that counts for fabricating a rib... :)

The hole in the VS-405 does not require removal (per Van's). However, I
cut mine out anyway. I drilled as large a hole as I could with my Unibit
..... then used a nibbler (from Radio shack for less than $10) to trim away
most of the material. Finally, I used a drum sander chucked in either an
electric drill or my dremel tool (can't remember which right now) to get to
final shape.

Would I do it again? Probably .... it's one of those easy things to do if
you waiting for primer to dry, etc. Certainly beats watching a Sitcom on
TV!
