I will be going to Van's later this month to pick up my rv-7 QB kit.
Van's suggest you rent a 24' truck. In measuring the kit this seems
like overkill especially since I am not picking up the finish kit at
this time.

Can anyone who has picked up a kit give me their opinion on this ?

Is there anything else I should plan for?

Thanks

Dick

Are you getting the wings as well?

I had a 27' truck. It was a little overkill, but not
much. A 24' would be perfect.

Dick,

You will need at least a 24' truck if you are pickup the QB kit (fuselage
and wings). I rented one from U-haul and the wheel wells protruded into the
bed area, making things a little difficult. Try to rent on where the bed
area is completely flat. I was able to slide the containers down the ramps
provided with the truck onto a couple of piano type dollies. The containers
are very heavy.

You are moving close to 1000 lbs. I would go with Van's suggestion.

Dick,

I used a 24' Ryder truck with lift on the end and I'm glad I did.
The kit barely fit. You need and want manuevering room inside the
truck without smashing everything. Also, the truck I rented was dock
height. ABF's docks are tractor-trailer high and they had no way to
get the fork lift down to ground level, they load me up just like a
big rig. When I got home, having the lift on the back was a savior
too. Myself and three other guys pushed the fuse crate out the back
on the lift, then let the end slowly teeter gently down to the
ground. With one end resting on the ground and the other on the
lift, I then lowered the lift to the ground and the four of us pushed
the crate into the garage. You won't hurt the crate sliding it on
the ground. Van's put 2X4's on the botton of the crates.

Hope this helps,
Tobin Basford

Ken, I picked up my 7A quick build kit from Van's, and 24' isn't overkill.
I had ordered a 24' U-Haul truck, but because one wasn't available they
substituted a 26' instead. I was glad I had the extra space. Van's did an
excellent job of packing the kit. They suggest a certain number of
blankets, don't skimp on them.

We used a 24' U-Haul truck to pick up QB kit (fuse, wings, finish). It fit
but the fuse crate
ended up wedged between the rear wheel housings. If I had to do it over I'd
use the 26' or
get a truck that doesnt have the wheel wells poking up quite so far.

It's a tradeoff between deck height and the rear wheel wells getting in the
way. If the 26'
U-Haul has a wider space between the wheel wells definitely go with that.
Don't underestimate the size of the fuse crate! It's absolutely huge...

Dick,
The 24' truck is not "overkill". Van's has a lot of experience
in packing these things so that it won't be damaged in transit and it
works out well. Van's might provide plenty of packing materials; you
should call and inquire about this. Nevertheless, I rented two dozen
blankets from U-Haul to provide additional cushion and packing. Also,
in a small kit bag, I had about 100 feet of small diameter (3/16")
nylon rope and a dozen bungee cords. This stuff is all handy to
control any vibration or movement and to separate any parts from
chaffing, etc. Stop and check the load after thirty minutes and again
in a few hours. You don't want to get home and find out that
something is nearly destroyed due to wear and impact from the ride.
(Those trucks ride rough.)

Thanks to all fot the input on truck size. I'm ordering 24 blankets
with the truck. My kit will not be crated proper padding makes
sense.. I wonder how the airline security people will react to a bag
full of rope and bungee cords when I board the plane. I'm flying into
Portland and picking up the truck there.

Thanks

The best thing to do is just un crate it in the truck.
The fuse by itself is not very heavy at all. 2
people can easily carry it. The reason why the crate
is 800 pounds is because the fuse is stuffed with
everything.
