In assembling the subject topic it appears that drilling the prepunched
601pp hole thru 601PP/702/405 will violate the edge distance on HS405 (the
forward part of 405 slides under the flange on the 702 forward spar and the
601pp skin is used as a drill guide.) The violation appears to be slight,
maybe as much as a 1/16" but it is hard to tell without actually drilling
the hole and measuring (405 is the bottom layer of the three being drilled
at this hole). I haven't drilled the hole to find out.
Is this in the category of "don't worry about it, it is one rivet" or is the
405 rib shorter than it should be? I tried taking out some of the flutes to
lengthen the flange but didn't appreciably affect it. The only solution I
see is that the portion of the 405 flange sliding under the 702 flange must
be longer to avoid the problem.
For what it's worth:
The instructions warn that when drilling the forward flange of HS405 to be
careful of hole location (i.e. top hole is not centered on HS710 stiffener
but is displaced downward to maintain 405 edge distance). What the
instructions don't warn about is exercising care to maintain edge distances
on the other holes i.e. the center holes in 405 go through the HS404 nose
rib aft flange when drilling the 405/702/404 holes. If you drill the HS405
holes where the measuresments on the plans state you will have violations on
the 404 nose rib. I moved the holes inboard on HS405 to move the resulting
holes on the aft flange of 404 inboard as a fix. Maybe this is a "don't
worry about it" issue as well but one of the problems of being a new builder
is not knowing which rules are sacred and which ones can occasionally be
bent.....
