RV-7 tip-up tailwheel
Question 1: It's unclear to me exactly how to trim the aft ends of the
F-786 J-channels. The drawing shows one of the 3 sets, but it sort of
implies that most of it is left to trial fitting. Since Van's has you trim
the ends at this phase, I'm curious if it's something that's better left
until the assembly starts coming together?
Question 2: I'm at the point where I've clecoed the tailcone skin to the
F-711 and F-712 bulkheads, and it's a pretty crappy fit the way the
pre-punched holes are spaced...or maybe the way the skin is curved. I'm
just curious if anybody else had any fit issues back there and how you
remedied it. This is reminiscent of drilling the fuel tank ribs! Is there
any sort of trick to getting the F-712 bulkhead or the tailcone skin to get
along better? Times like this, the pre-punched stuff is a real pain! 8^)
Thanks in advance,

Dan,
Q1: The trim in the J channels IS a trial fit scenario. I trimmed mine exactly
as shown in the plans but I had to trim more later when fitting them to the
fuse. Don't worry about the trimming part looking like the plans. For one you
will never see it and two you'll end up removing more anyway. As a start
however copy the plans and you may have to remove more later which is easily
done with a dremel tool.
Q2: The F711/F712 fit. One of those parts you'll be happy when its past. Don't
worry about clecoeing them to the rear bottom skin right now (don;t drill them
to the skin either as the plans say to). Wait until the aft end is together and
the side skins will help form the stiff bottom cone and the bulkheads will fit
better (relatively). I also elected to use -4 rivet in the F710 and F711 to
make the fit better.

The J channels are fabricated on both front and aft ends about the
same. In essence the vertical part of the cross section is left to
slide beside the bulkhead to catch a rivet. I think I trimmed the
aft and left the front to be finished when fitting the 606?
bulkhead. Theplans show a rather complicated cutting arrangement
with a lot of 1/32" dimensions. Its not that big a deal.
The tailcone is another matter. The skin is .040 and very stiff. I
worked from the center bottom up either side. It takes some time to
fit the tailwheel bracket also. There is a cutout pattern on the
plans to get to the initial chop out of the tailcone skin. I didn't
find this until I almost had it gnawed out.
The holes WILL line up when you get it in the right spot.
