Home -> RV-7 and RV-7A topic: More butcher than builder

Hi all,

I need some reassurance. I'm feeling like I'm butchering my kit.
Sometimes I feel like I'll never get past the inspector at the rate
I'm going. Tonight I made a mess of bending the two little tabs on
the trailing edge of the left elevator. At first I thought I did a
fairly ok job until I started riveting the skin on and saw I had a
large bulge where the tabs were. In trying to fix that I ended up
cracking the trailing edge of the skin. I ended up cutting the tabs
off and fabricating an end rib. However the skin in and around the
rib is all marred up and looks like a prime spot for a future crack.
I wish I had made the end rib in the first place. I recommend
cutting the tabs off from the get go. Judging from the archives,
most people who make the end rib do so only after failing to
adequately bend the tabs, at which point (IMHO) it becomes a job that
is twice as hard. I never did want a show quality plane, but now I'm
just hoping for an airworthy one.

I had the same feelings and the same frustrations (I am at about the
same point you are now). The best thing I did was have an official
visit from an EAA tech counselor. My work was not nearly as bad as I
had imagined and he gave me lots of tips and even instruction that
has helped a lot. There is a learning curve and getting people over
to look at your project and give advice is very helpful. Frustration
and mistakes still happen, but am getting better. Get with your
nearest EAA chapter and get a tech counselor visit.

Don't panic. I did ecxatly the same. Couldn't bend the
damn thing correctly so I ended up making one and
taking it to a friend at the body shop where he used a
thick primer to fix all the blemishes around it. It's
just a stage. (That keeps comming back).
Good luck.

Hi Tobin;

I just finished my left elevator trim tab. It isn't the prettiest,
but it will work just fine. In my building process I made a mistake
on the right elevator counterbalance skin E-713 and had to reorder a
new one. It only cost $7.00 ($12.00 with shipping). So, I suppose
what I'm saying is that mistakes will be made and if I have a doubt
as to the airworthiness then I'll reorder new parts and do it better
the second time.

Before ordering new parts, you might sleep on it awhile and see how
you feel about it after being away for awhile. I also like another's
idea of getting in contact with an EAA person.

You will do fine....
