Home -> RV-7 and RV-7A topic: lower fuselage gusset

Has anyone who has been her before offer some advice??

I will set the stage:

-7 taildragger

The dwg say trim out aft 4 inches of the leg of the lower fuse
longeron for nose gear only. So I didn't. The lower longeron is
the 1 inch by 1 1/4 inch angle that fits along the lower edge on the
side skin.

This notch out is for the main gear weldment as per the 34A dwg.

BUT I have a f 7114 gusset, - this is the triangle gusset that
matches the bolt pattern in the lower corner of the carry-thru spar,-
-- that seems to want to fit in this location and I believe I am
going to have to go back and cut out the 4 " of the longeron leg --
although the dwg says that I shouldn't.

It looks like Van intended to bolt this gusset in place so that it
could be removed for a nose dragger mod.

Did anybody just say --forget it-- and rivet the gusset in place.

Am I on the right track to remove the leg of the lower long.

I am sure this diatribe is completely confusing to most

thanks

I TOO HAD THIS PROBLEM. THE PLANS THAT I RECIEVED DID NOT SHOW THAT GUSSETT, BUT THE TRI-GEAR WELDMENT. MY SMALL PREVIEW PLANS HOWEVER DID SHOW THE GUSSETT, AND AFTER A LONG TALK WITH KEN @ VANS, WE CONCLUDED THAT YES YOU DO HAVE TO REMOVE THE MATERIAL FROM THE LOWER PART OF THE LONGERON TO CLEAR THE GUSSETT.
MY -7 IS NEARING THE HANGER, AND I NOW HAVE INSTALLED THESE GUSSETTS AND EVERYTHING FITS FINE.

This one got me also- I put a stainless steel plate under the longerons 4 by
6 to protect the skin. I also put thin sheet alum over the side just above
the longerons. I drilled quarter inch holes in the corner of the longerons
that needed to be cut out to give it some radius. I put the cut off wheel in
the air drill and laid a board next to the longerons to give me the correct
depth. With everything protected I cut as much as I could then used the
dremel to finish up. Also used the scotch bright wheel to smooth it. I looked
to see where I went wrong so as to not get caught again and could only find
one spot that showed the longerons cut but that didn't show the whole cut so
was very easy to not see. I think it added about 6 hours plus a lot of
thinking.
