Author: "David" <petradraper@...> Time: Mon Oct 7, 2002 4:03 am PDT Link

Although I am only just about to order my empennage kit to be built
in Germany I am interested to know if anyone has any thoughts/advice
on sidewall throttles instead of panel location.

I've known two people who have tried it...one went back to the panel
installation and the other is thinking about it. More difficult to
install and no real benefit. You'll never think about which hand is
on the stick, and the more experience you have (even in right stick,
left throttle airplanes) the easier the transition will be.

I installed a left hand throttle in my RV-6. The two lever quadrant came
from Tracy Saylor and I really like it. He sells (sold?) a three lever
version as well.

It opens the space between you and the pasenger, so you're not bumping elbows
and shoulders as much, plus it gets a bunch of things out of the way in the
center of the panel. Another neat thing is that it gives you something to
talk about at fly-ins, and that you've got the throttle and stick in the
"right" hands if you're ever lucky enough to fly warbirds, cubs, champs, or
other aircraft with the throttle on the left side.

The obvious downside is that your passenger won't have a full set of controls
- stick and pedals only, not throttle access unless s/he has very long arms.
In my case, I can't imagine letting the right seater takeoff or land the
airplane anyway, so I'm quite happy to be the only occupant with brake or
throttle control.

If I built a -7 or a -9, I'd strongly recommend this modification.

Is this the throttle quadrant machined from billet? Somewhere I saw an ad a
while back for a high quality machined throttle quadrant, but I have since
been unable to locate the ad or source. Does anyone know the source of the
quadrant described below and/or the one I described?

The quadrant supplied by Tracy Saylor is not machined. It is formed
aluminum. Memory tells me that Tracy has shifted the sales of his products
to a company run by his daughter, but I can't remember the name of the
company. If you browsed throught the RV list yeller pages, you could
probably find the new company.

I do not have a picture of the installation. I've been asked for one several
times, but I never remember to take one when I'm at the airport...

David,

I had the same thoughts on the left-hand controls. Although this is
not a "side-wall" solution, it is a left-hand solution. Check out
http://www.planes-wings-things.com/rv-6_panel.htm. Laird Owens in
Southern California developed a composite panel that incorporates
left-hand vernier controls. Pretty slick but it only works, at this
time, for the sliders.

On the left side throttle: I ran into a nice RV-6 this last summer in Idaho. He had the throttle on the left and moved it there after getting very involved in formation flying. He found it worked much better to have right had stick and left throttle while looking out the window at spacing.

Yeah - that's the one - thanks for your help, Paul - I will bookmark it this
time. It looks like a very nice one.
