Home -> RV-7 and RV-7A topic: MEK alternative

Author: "Joseph J. Hobbs" <jjhobbs@...> Time: Wed Oct 9, 2002 10:19 pm PDT Link

Seeking advice on aluminum prep/prime/paint from the pros. Must I use Methel Ethel Ketone(sp) or MEK? That stuff will eat you up! Is there an alternative that is more civilized? Or can I just scratch everything clean with Scotchbrite pads and apply the etching primer without MEK?

I have some great local sources (Auto Painters Supply in Phoenix) for primer and paint. SEM Products, Inc. self etching primer (with the light purple panel on the label) works great. It is 39683 Gray. Another RV builder here has had them blend for a topcoat paint that matches the powdercoat color and finish perfectly.

I am thinking about trying to get along with rattle cans to get me to the point where I have a professional do the exterior. Plans could change, but that sounds doable for now - way down the road till I get there.

So I would like an alternative to MEK if possible.

Hi Joe,
I am dealing with this issue also. I have finally purchased a heavy duty pair of rubber gloves that the MEK does not melt off my hands. I can't feel the parts I am holding with them but they have lasted for several working sessions. I also do my wiping down over the top of my downdraft exhaust painting table to keep the fumes from building up in the small shop I use. A friend showed me an interesting demonstration. If you wipe the skins down as clean as you can with MEK you will still see a residue remaining, this is especially evident on stainless steel. A second wipe down with Naptha, (Coleman Fuel), will then wipe it down clean with no "apparent " residue. For real small clean ups, like erasing layout markings etc. I keep a can of "Gumout" around.

MEK for a prep wipe! Yikes! I'm using the Sherwin-Wiliams P60G2
etching primer. They said straight laquer thinner is all I need to
wipe down the aluminum before priming. For some reason I scuff it
with a gray scotch bright pad too but I don't think thats needed.

I'm using laquer thinner and then an pre-cleaner that I picked up
from an automotive paint supplier. This stuff will remove any wax or
grease before painting and leave no residue.

Oh, and I'm using those non-latex disposable gloves and they work
just fine. But, I'm sure MEK will disolve them.

Joe,

I use a product called Sher-Wil-Kleen. It is a
cleaner/degreaser that is meant for cleaning parts
prior to priming. It is very mild, and works great.
You can get it from Sherwin Williams automotive paint
stores. There are two in the phoenix area. Bell Road
in North Phoenix and University/McClintock in Tempe.

Yep, they will. I used MEK once and thought, "this is nuts!" Wouldn't
the alodine prep washes do the job?

MEK, by the way, was helpful for getting duct tape goop off the skins
after I used it on a hot weekend to hold the bent leading edges
together while I clecoed and riveted.

I didn't use MEK on anything and I haven't had any problems. I just
rubbed my parts a little with scotchbrite to take off the shine,
blew them off with an airgun and shot them Nason etching primer. Of
course, I'm not talking about exterior painting -- just the stuff you
prime for corrosion protection.

For most smaller parts, though, I used 5-Star etching primer from
rattle cans (I like that brand mostly because the color matches and
the sprayer didn't clog so easily). I didn't drag out the paint gun
until I had large assemblies to prime -- like when the fuse was
done. Or when I painted the big panels for the wing.

Rattle can primer is sure convenient, but it's expensive. And the
paint isn't near as durable. I for sure wouldn't use it for anything
I planned to paint over or that might be exposed to wear.

I've been using NAPA 7220 Self Etching Primer in a Spray bomb...Local group has been using for awhile...Seem really durable, In fact a RV-4 builder that has used Mix/Spray and this says that after about 3 years the Mix/Spray he used wiped off real easy and this stuff held strong.
