I had it also, Norton caught it and now it is in quarantine. I just got my desktop machine out of the shop, it had the Klez or Kern virus. My Norton got to be a year old and I guess it didn't catch it. It made the machine do very strange things. The folks at the shop said that virus has made them alot of money this year. Bottom line, you have to replace your virus protection when new versions come out, even though the old one is continuing to do its updates.

Spend the $10-$20 each year to keep your virus definition subscription up to date. If not, you may regret it!!! Remember the old commercial, Pay me now, or pay me later!

The 10 or 20 dollars for the subscription is what will get you into trouble. You have to buy the new version of the software as it comes out to be best protected. So I was told recently by the local shop that made repairs on my machine.

dat subscriptions are free, the 10-20 dollars is for the upgrades to the
software as they come out, just be careful to download the newest updates to
the engines and keep the dat files as current as possible. I would recommend
having a live update check every morning. Experience tells that there are
sometimes as many as 2 updates a day as new virus's are detected and how
they impact the business world.

You have to buy the new version of the software as it comes out to be best
protected. So I was told recently by the local shop that made repairs on my
machine.

They may be trying to sell software. My two year old Norton with the latest updates (set to update
daily)
has no trouble catching all of the current latest viruses being discussed here. Have not had any
problems.

Randy,
Both answers are not 100% true. One of the sites I support has the latest Symantec product. Unfortunately, the person at that machine disables the live update whenever it starts and this machine never receives the latest definitions. Even with the latest application looking for viruses, it still needs the latest definitions to know what to look for.
__
If you are using one of the original products, McAfee/Symantec/etc..., it may not know where to look for some of the viruses even with the latest definitions. If you have one of their products from the last few years AND the latest definitions, you should be fine.

The BugBear virus is very clever. It has the potential to check your address book as it come in and it can therefore give you a contaminated email which appears to come from a friend (you must know them because they're in your address book).

Then when you get the virus you ring up and warn your friend that they've sent you the virus....but they haven't. It's come from another source. The virus has simply plucked your friend from your address book and infills him / her as the sender of the contaminated email.
