RV-7 tailwheel tip-up
I'm about to rivet the side skins onto the aft fuselage, and there's a
noticeable gap between the bottom edges of the side skins and the bottom
skin. More than a fingernail's worth. I figure I can easily take the side
skins off and edge roll 'em a little bit, but I wanted to see if others have
had to do this or not. It sure doesn't look like the side skin edge will
lay flat against the bottom skin, even once riveted.
Of course just the other day I told somebody about the aileron skins and
this same situation...that the skin lays flat as you rivet it. But I wanted
to double check since it's sort of now or never (or else I'll have to drill
out rivets).
Any tips or perspective here is appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
)_( Dan

Dan,
It was me that you told about the ailerons. I'm not sure what joint
you're talking about, seeing as how I just got my fuselage kit
yesterday, but I can tell you I have seen some "ugly" RVs at Oshkosh
because the bulders didn't edge form their fuselage skins. If you
take a skin and just deburr and dimple it befiore riveting, the
pressure of the rivet being set WILL cause the edge near the rivet
line to push away from whatever it is lying against, be it a butt or
overlapping joint. The whole purpose of the edge forming tool that
comes with the Avery tool kit is to put a slight pre-bend DOWN in the
skin edge so that after riveting, it will then lie neutral - FLAT. I
bought the Celeveland edge forming tool and so far it's work great -
once set with a piece of scrap the same thickness as the skin you
want to edge form, you can form a long edge UNIFORMLY and QUICKLY.
Cheers,
