Just curious how others have secured the aft fuselage on sawhorses (or
otherwise) when riveting the skins on. Seems to me that it would be easier
both to secure and keep twist-free if it was flipped over and resting on
some sort of feaux longerons or something. Any tips?

Dan - I didn't rivet any of the aft skins until I had the longerons in place with clecoes. Then the bottom aft skin rivets were bucked with the fuse upside down on the sawhorses. It is good to be concerned with the possible twisting so use levels and plumb lines to get things right.

I had a bugger of a time trying to get things level, found my sawhorses were not level, then found my garage floor was not level - so no wonder! So you might have to use small shims on the sawhorses. Once the rivets are in place things get very rigid - beautiful sight to see it all nice and straight.

Dan,

I did not waste much time keeping the saw horses level and did
most of fuselage right side up. I riveted the skins myself as far
down as I could reach and then rolled the unit upside down
when I had a friend buck bottom inside rivets.

The fuselage has no twist as Smart Level reads zero at the
firewall and at the tail. The matched hole technology is very
accurate and blessing indeed. What is important is to clamp the
longerons even with the top of the skin it is riveted to. The
fuselage has to come out level if the longeron follows the skin
edge. Of course the skin has to be clecoed to the ribs and then
the longeron is slid into position.

I am up to the plan paragragh that states it is time to mate the
wings and fuselage and waiting for the QB wings which are
somewhere in the west coast dock strike mess.

So far, about 260 hours assembling the fuselage. As I wait for
the wings, I've about decided to rivet the aft top skins as I can
find no reason not to. And also the empannage can be leveled
and attached. There's always something to do.
