Home -> RV-7 and RV-7A topic: IO-360 engine question

Author: "Mark Olson" <molson1@...> Time: Sat Oct 12, 2002 5:32 pm PDT Link

I have an opportunity to buy a 200 HP IO-360 engine and was looking for
opinions on
how good of a deal it really is.

A mechanic I know rebuilt an 450-hour since new IO-360 that he got from a
plane totaled
for insurance reasons (not a crash, and not engine stoppage). He was
intending
to put it into a Lancair he was building at the time.

Since then, he's decided he isn't going to finish the Lancair and wants to
sell the engine.
It was rebuilt by him, though parts like the fuel injection system and mags
were rebuilt by a reputable shop in the area.

It's been Lubriplated and dessicant placed in all the cylinders, and has
been in storage
for about 2 years.

This engine does not have a vacuum pump, alternator or prop governor. Its
case uses
the front-mount governor option, which I believe is compatible with the
RV-7A I am building.

He will only sell it as non-certified, experimental only.

He wants $13K for it.

Is this a deal? It seems, if this engine is as in good of condition as he
claims (and I have really no doubts that it is) that this is a pretty good
price for an engine like this.

Your opinions much appreciated...

Mark,

You need to find out what he considers a rebuild on a 450 hour
engine. Did he just pull it apart and put it back together with
fresh cylinders? Or did he send off the critical parts like the
crank, cam, case, etc. and have them magnafluxed, reconditioned and
yellow taged? If so make sure you get the yellow tags even if he's
selling it as an experimental engine. This will at the very least
help you with insurance issues.

Or is he maybe just wanting to sell it as an experimental enging for
liability issues? 13K would be a good deal if he has proof of the
critical parts being serviced.

Just saw this on aero-news.net:

Superior XP-360 price reduction due to high volume of sales

carb 0360 down to $19,990 from $23,000
injected 0360 down to $22,290 from $27280

Got to like it when prices come down. Just wanted to make everyones
engine choice more difficult. Now if we can just get Van to cary them
and get another 10 - 15% discount everyone will be using a new engine.

A front mount prop governor will not fit inside of Van's 200hp RV-7A
cowl.

In fact, you'll also need to get the Skytec starter if you don't have
one, as this is the only one that fits the IO-360 induction setup from
Van's, and you may need to get a 40 amp alternator instead of the 60
amp due to forward cowl clearances. Its very tight in there with the
IO-360.

I have been told that there is a fairly easy mod to the cowl for a front
mounted governor, and that
there is a clearly marked place on it for this. I'll make sure and ask
Vans to verify this.

Thanks for the "heads-up", I certainly don't want to end up with an engine
that won't fit!
