Today I was installing the capacitive fuel sensors in my first wing
and the instructions tell you to rivet a stiffener to the outside of
the inboard-most tank rib and then mount the sending unit module to
it with a tie wrap and not tighten it too tight as it may damage the
unit. I have never seen anything mentioned before of this sending
unit, or the fabrication of the stiffener, although I often wondered
how the capacitive units themselves would drive a fuel gauge. Is
this something I missed in the inventory or does it come later with
the fuselage or finish kit.

The A/D converters come with the fuel gauge.

I think that it depends on the gauge that you buy. Van sells a unit that converts the capacitance of the sender to the resistive signal that 95% of all the gauges out there use. From what I have understood the only instrument that can read the capacitance directly is the EI unit (you know the $400 one) The Grand Rapids EIS needs a little converter box, as do the Van's gauges. I don't know about the other ones. If I were you I would skip the extra holes in the tank and worry about mounting the box later when you know whether you will actually have a box or not. At least that is what I have done. You can always mount it in the space between the wing root and the fuse. If you do want to use the piece of stiffener, obviously you will need to go ahead and install it now before you seal up your tanks.
