Home -> RV-7 and RV-7A topic: 7A gear mount interference

Author: "rvbuildertx" <walt99@...> Time: Tue Oct 22, 2002 6:38 pm PDT Link

Thought I saw this before but can't seem to find it now. While trial
fitting my 7A main gear fittings (WD-721)to the F704 spar,
interference between the fwd F704 (spar carry thru) and the L/G
fitting preventing it from sitting flush. One obviously needs to be
trimmed but which one? Seems like the obvious place to trim would be
the flange on the 704 but want to make sure before I do it.

Walt,
I didn't have to trim either on my -7a. I remember it being a very tight fit, and the trim holes in the skin where the main gear legs will pass thru is critical to a good fit. Aslo, there are holes in the gear fitting that allow some button head rivets in the spar to be accepted by the gear fitting.
Hope this helps.
Brian

Brain,
Thanks for the reply. I probably wasn't that clear but the interference is
between the 704 skin flange and the tube right in the lower outboard corner
where the weld is (where the tube will exit the skin). It wont let the gear
weldment sit flush on the spar the way it is (about an 1/8 in. gap). Both
weldments are exactly the same and fit the same way. It appears as though I
would have to trim about 1/4 in. of the 704 skin flange to make it sit
flush.

Walt
Mine was the exact same way. I had the first one in and out about 20 times carefully trim the hole a little each time. It took a long time to get it right. Second one took about ten minutes since I new how aggressive to get.

-i had to trim the bottom flange of the 704 and exterior skin forward
of where the main gear leg tube exits the fuselage in order to fit
the mount. i have done a lot of mumbling under my breath about the
gear mount fitting, and then bending the fuel lines thru the mounts.
