When I ordered my wing kit, I ordered the Duckworks
landing/taxi lights (1 for each wing). Now in the
leading edge construction , I pulled these out of
the box for the first time and began fitting to ribs.
I'm not impressed. In past posts I've seen mention
of landing/taxi/strobe/nav set-up that all fits in
the wingtip lens. I'm ready to order strobe/nav
system and would like to have a look at these? Can
anyone point me in the right direction? care to coment
on either type? I'd appreciate it.

this week.

Send the Duckworks back. Not the best quality and
solution. Also, I think they don't look very good
with the leading edge hacked up. Go with either the
RMD or Bill Vondane kits. MUCH nicer installation.

Thanks Britt for the Von Dane address and Paul
for the advice. I'll be using the Von Dane lights.
What I was not impressed with was having to
disassemble a light intended for a car bumper and
reassemble for use in a wing. (that and having to
cut a hole in my leading edge)

I have no problem disassembling a car light to put on
this aircraft, when it burns I will go to the Auto
parts store and buy a new one for $2.00. I also
enjoyed very much putting that opening on the wing, it
looks fantastic.
Roger.

I still haven't seen a post by anyone stating how effective the tip mounted
landing lights are in comparison to the duct works lights. I believe
they should work just fine, but I'd still like to hear from someone who has
Von Dane's lights and has flown at night with them. Anyone had any
problems with the heat around the fiberglass?
How about some info, someone? I got a need to spend some money.

The heck with it. I ordered the leading edge lights from Vans with
my wings. And I'm going to put the von dane lights on my wing tips
too. That way I'll have all my bases covered.
"whats that a 747 on final? Nope it's an RV-7!" :^)
BTW: the Von Dan lights are using a hologen light designed for
interior light or outdoor landscape lighting. So if your not sure
about the Automobile light consider this. The auto light is desgined
to handle vibrations and to the best of my knowledge Von Danes are
not. And as you well know automotive lights have gotten a shot of
hightech recently. I'm sure it would be no trick to use an HID unit
with the Vans lights. Also are there any Vondane lights flying yet?
Besides Von Danes? If there are it would be interesting to hear some
feedback on just how much light they put out.
I'm not putting either one down. Just pointing out pros and cons of
each.

Can't speak for the Vondane lights, but I had the RMD
light kit. I believe they are hotter than Bill's, and
they are VERY bright. The position is perfect,
because they don't reflect too much back at you, and
light up the entire runway. I was really happy with
the looks of the wing tip lights. Much more so than
the duckworks look. To each his own, but for me, the
wingtip light is a no brainer. I haven't personally
seen Bill's kit, but I've seen the design and it looks
great. I think his will fit the new wingtips, too.

I emailed Bill as I was thinking about these as well but I may be converting
the tips to hold fuel so they are not suitable for me.

I've been having some discussions with Duckworks about an HID upgrade
option to their existing kit. Should be much brighter, use less
power (35W), and be cooler than any existing 50 or 100W halogen
bulb. HID isn't cheap, but if you want really, really bright, it is
the way to go.
I think they'll be announcing something on their website in the next
couple of weeks.

Roger,
I am about to embark on the "bold step" of cutting the hole. Is there any
tendency for the spanwiseedges (ie. top and bottom edges) to bow outwards in
the middle due to the relief of the stress in the bent leading edge. This
has been worrying me, and has delayed me taking to the saw.
Thanking you Robert Ward. Queensland Australia.

As long as your cutting tool is fresh, it won't bow at all. I used a Dremel
cutting disc followed by a Dremel mini sanding drum. You will smile at how
well it turns out. Just go slow.

Motorcyclist News had a review on headlights in one issue and it was illuminating (I couldn’t help it). What it came down to was that HID lights appear brighter, but do not necessarily illuminate better. This is for the same reason that white clothes look whiter if you put some blue food coloring in the wash (Hints from Heloise).
Fog lights on cars are tinted yellow and cut through fog better than the blue light from HID. Admittedly I have never seen yellow fog lights on an airplane, but haze is a concern when the night cools off the atmosphere so I would want the best fog penetration I could get. If I can locate the article in my archived stack next to my bed I will try to scan it.

I believe it is pretty well accepted that HID is BRIGHTER as well as
WHITER then halogen lights.... but I'll wait for your article to see
what it says.
Regarding yellow being better for fog lights, here is some
information on this debate...

They ARE brighter I think what the other poster was trying to point out
is that the color of the light is also different and easier on the eyes
as it is a more natural daytime color of light.
