Home -> RV-7 and RV-7A topic: Prioritizing tool needs

Author: "bcollins747_1999" <bcollins@...> Time: Fri Jun 6, 2003 7:53 am PDT Link

In my next life, I'm hoping to come back as a member of the
Checkoway clan <g> (if you're not one of those people who HAS to log
on to Dan's site every morning to see what nifty thing he bought
yesterday, you should...it's really fun!), but until then...having
watched the Orndorf wing video, it's clear I'm going to need some
more tools and I'm going to have to prioritize them since I can't
afford them all.

So...and right now we're talking wing construction...if you had a
choice of a drill press, belt (or drum) sander, or band saw, which
would you buy first...second..third.

It also seems obvious to me that buying a pneumatic squeezer will
make a lot of sense. Again, in my world, I need to accumulate
slowly....so do you have a recommendation of a squeezer and if I
could only buy one yoke at this point, what should it be?

bob

i wouldn't start one of these animals without a pnumatic squeezer.

I bought one from Avery when they were on sale. I only own a 3 inch
yolk and have just about finished all the rivet work. More yolks
would be fun but I just kept getting by w/o. I sure hated to spend
the $ 150 or so each.

Ebay has them regularly.

Drill press is my highest priority. Mine is a 'made in china' model.

Band saw is also handy. $ 99 form the toolking.com or about the
same at Home Depot

I have one of those 1" Delta belt/disk sanders. But gosh, they don't
cost but $ 79.

for what it worth department

El cheapo Jones here,
$49 drill press from Harbor Freight. Bought a pneumatic squeezer
with a ~2 inch yoke on Ebay. Only own one yoke. As I was counseled
by Phil B, you're going to drive 90% of the rivets anyway so save the
money on additional yokes and buy avionics. Don't own a belt sander
(use a vixen file and scotch brite wheel in a die grinder bought from
Harbor freight on sale) and don't own a band saw (get a good vise,
(you'll need it anyway to bend the longerons) and use a hacksaw)).

1) I use the older "Main squeeze" from Cleveland and like it very much. It
is an excellent quality tool and the new version is even better for
mechanical advantage. I have not had the need for a pneumatic squeezer
even though I would like to, but not necessary so far as most rivets get
bucked anyway. I use only one yolk, 3" but will probably buy a 3" or 4"
thin nose no hole for the tight spots that I have left undone until I get
one.

2) I recently bought a good band saw, put a fine tooth blade on and can't
imagine making all those fuselage pieces without it. A real time saver.

3) I had a large drill press before the airplane project and find it very
useful for some holes, like the ones that are in thicker material that have
to be right on 90 degrees to the material. A small drill press would
suffice.

I have a belt sander too but have never found it useful. Don't need it.
Hope this helps.
