One of the things that stinks about living in Minnesota is that on a
gorgeous day in June, I'm thinking about preparing for the coming
winter.

Given my....umm....relaxed...pace of construction and the fact the
wing kit won't be here for a few weeks, I'm guessing that by the time
I get to the fuel tank construction, it'll be too cold in my unheated
garage to be working with ProSeal.

Is there anything in the wing construction that would make it
impractical to begin with the fuel tanks? Is there any fitting that
needs to be done to a constructed part...thus negating my plan?

I figure I can get the fuel tanks done during the warmer months and
then spend the winter prying my fingers off the cold, steel handle of
the rivet gun while I work on the rest of the assembly.

BC,

The only really critical part of the fuel tank that has to be built
in assembly with the wing are the Z-brackets. Oh and you can forget
using Van's instructions for doing that. Take that section of the
instructions and pitch it. You can see how I did it on my web site.
web.tampababy.rr.com/flrv7a I think the rest of it could be match
drilled after the tank is assembled. These match drilled parts line
up very well. Lets put it this way I had to order a new leading
edge skin (don't ask why). I was concerned about it lining up with
my match drilled ribs... Matched up PERFECT.

YES!, unless they have changed the instructions on making the Z
brackets, pitch the instructions (IMHO). I don't see any reason why you
couldn't prep the spars with all of the nut plates and countersunk holes
and then go ahead and complete the fuel tanks on the spars. You will
probably want to have the outer leading edge ribs and skins cleco'd on
just to give the spar a little more rigidity. I just back riveted the
top skins on my first wing today so I am where you will be when the snow
starts flying.

If you don't already have them, get one of Cleveland Tool's tank dimple
die sets. You will be glad you did. I also bought Avery's back rivet
set for the top main wing skins. Every rivet turned out beautiful
unlike the rest of the wing :-(

Thanks. I've been reading the manual...over....and over....and last
week the Orndorf wing construction video arrived. Much more
entertaining than the emp video, I thought. George makes working with
ProSeal almost seem fun. I'll review his section on the zbrackets and
consult your site. And thanks!

Do you recommend the Orndorf videos you have purchased (and what are they exactly). Does their emp video cover the new fully prepunched tail (released approx Feb 2002) and revised rudder. Does it matter ???? Does anybody out there recommend any of Orndorf's other videos eg Sheet metal tools etc etc

I'm right in the middle of building tanks on my -8. Several things have
surprised me. One of which is how quickly I arrived at the point where I
get to start building a tank by following the instructions. I've been
working on the wings for about 4 or 5 weeks (saturdays and most
evenings) and started the tanks 10 days ago. Second thing to surprise me
was how daft the instructions for placing the Z brackets is. Actually,
that's not quite true. Placing the brackets is fine, it is the way they
get you to position the baffle that is out of whack! If it doesn't
fit.... OVAL THE HOLES!!! What??? I just spent months NOT ovalling
holes. You can't nonchalantly tell me to oval some now!! It is against
my newly found nature!!

I followed the method Dan has on his site with two exceptions (thanks
Dan! Great photos!!). The instructions suggest that after you drill one
centre hole in the brackets you should bolt them on the aft side of the
spar and drill from the top. I think Dan bolted them on the forward side
(facing upwards if your wing is on a stand - correct me if I
misunderstood this Dan!) which requires you to drill upwards from inside
the wing. Drilling from the top through the spar saves you getting a
face full of metal and is just easier! If you are going to do this you
have to make sure that you are drilling the correct holes so that when
you do finally mount the brackets on the forward side it will all line
up properly - place the bracket over the holes and then lift it, pull it
towards you and then down and the flip it before mounting underneath. It
is very easy to flip it the wrong way and have the holes the wrong way
round. This is not the end of the world but certainly in my case the
bolts were a very tight fit through the spar so they want to be in the
right place!

The last thing that has surprised me so far is how much work there is to
build a tank!! It looks so simple when you lay out the parts! But the
skin is really thick for one thing so just fitting the ribs in place
seemed to be a fairly serious fight. Getting the brackets on the
spar.... Well 3 full evenings work to do that! Dimpling the skin....
Tough to do on your own because of the curvature of the top which is
difficult to get sitting flat between the dimple dies. Having said that
though... The tank seems to be a lot of fun to build!

One last comment about tanks.... If you are going with the standard fuel
pickups, consider ordering some extra tube ahead of time. My kit came
with enough to make two pickup tubes and about 2 inches to spare. So you
can't mess one up. BUT... This is the first time you are dealing with
this sort of tube (bending and flaring). I messed up twice (the second
time I got a great bend but could not get the collar far enough onto the
tube to allow me to flare the end!). When I went to order more tubing...
Lo!!! You can buy ready made fuel pickups from Vans. If like me you
would normally pay more for shipping than for the parts..... Buying the
prefab tubes is a no brainer!! I hope they are ok when they arrive!

Have fun!!
Graham

PS. I deviated from Dans plan, but I didn't call Dan! Ooh err!!

OK, BC, since nobody has mentioned the obvious fix for your problem,
since your are no doubt going to spend more time building in the
winter than summer, you really need to heat your work shop and be
done with it. There are several ways to go about it, if you just
spend a little money on insulation first.

Yeah, it's on my list. Right after, new French doors to the deck
($1,000), new hardwood flooring ($1,000), re-roofing the house
($5,000). The siding is all shot to heck too ($????). Then there's
the fuselage kit ($8,000), the engine ($24k), the avionics ($10-
$15k) and the new tools I'll need for the wings ($1,000).

Fortunately, I just got my kid's final semester report card from
school. Doesn't look like he'll be going to college so that'll save
me a few bucks <g
