I've identified a few additional items that I am going to need in the
process of constructing the wing kit ...
1) Proseal for the fuel tanks
2) Plastic conduit for routing/running wires
3) Leading edge landing/taxi light
4) Zinc chromate primer for everything
Any additional tools/items should I be considering at this point before I
get too far along ?

Ron,
May I suggest you use an aviation grade self-etching primer instead
of zinc chromate, its very good and can eliminate anodizing in most cases.

Ron, if you don't already have a torque wrench, unibit and/or fly cutter, you will probably need these early on in the wing project. Also consider you will need a flop tube (if you want to go upside down), and you will have to decide on the type and get fuel senders fairly soon. Tie down rings also but don't really need them yet.

I'm just working on my first tank..... In addition to the things
mentioned by others I found myself short of appropriate tools for wiring
(crimper, wire stripper, solder), tubing flarer (I bought one but I
imagine if you could borrow one as and when you need it you'd be ok),
tube bender of some sort. I bought a small set of the coil type benders
which seem to work quite well and were quite cheap.
On the subject of bending tubes, if you are going with the 'customer
built' fuel pickups you will probably find that you are supplied with
enough tube to make two of them and have about 4" left over. I found
this was not enough. This is the first time I had to deal with tube
bending and flaring! My first attempt went wrong after calling Vans
about the best way to crimp the end of the tube. Advised to cut slots in
the tube before crimping the end I ended up with my slots too close to
the end so when I crimped.... The end slot simply collapsed leaving a
large hole. On my second attempt I started the initial bend in the pipe
too close to where the tube goes into the fitting on the inspection
plate. Result.... The collar will not go on far enough to allow me to
fit the tube in the flaring tool. The remaining 4" is not going to turn
into a fuel pickup no matter how hard I try!!
The fly cutter comes in handy when you are working on the tank as you
will need to cut a large circle in the inboard rib. If, however, like me
you have a drill press and have it set to a fairly fast speed.... Make
absolutely sure that you crank its speed down to below 500rpm or
whatever it says on the box BEFORE starting the thing up with the fly
cutter in for the first time. My drill press requires you to move belts
on its pulleys to change speeds and like an idiot.... I forgot to change
the speed. Turned it on with the fly cutter in place and of course it
started to vibrate. As I went to switch the thing off to reset the speed
the cutter arm shot out like a bullet, flew past my arm, narrowly missed
my wing and thudded into the opposite wall. Had it hit my wing it would
have gone straight through.... Had it hit me in the chest I don't like
to think what the result would have been. No harm done on this occasion
but a good reminder to practice safe techniques when using some of these
tools! A similar experience early on in this endeavour taught me always
to remove the air line from my drill before going anywhere near it with
a chuck key!
Hope some of this is useful!
Graham

I used disposable plastic syringes for applying the pro seal to the parts &
then buttered it with a pop stick. It makes the application of a bead along
seams & rivet tails super easy. You can buy them at a surgical or veterinary
supply store. You can refill them & use them over during the same pro sealing
session. Have plenty of solvent, rags & latex gloves on hand.

Is there anybody out there who -- like me -- is allergic to Latex,
that has a solution to the problem of working with solvents..like
MEK. It eats through vinyl gloves in about 3 seconds.

Acetone is a perfectly good solvent for Proseal and most other gunk.

Bob,
You might consider talking to your dentist to see if he/she would
order you some nitrile gloves. I use them for latex-sensitive
patients, and they are much more resistant to chemicals.

For cleaning up with MEK or laquer thinner after pro sealing I used the blue
nitrile gloves that auto mechanics use. They are more solvent resistant. You
can get them at auto supply stores.

Try www.shieldmaster.com or www.kchealthcare.com (Both are links to "SafeSkin" nitrile glove retailers.)

I have been using NITRILE gloves. They are pretty good, not latex and
resistant to pretty much anything. The only problem, get the right size,
they don't stretch very well before they split.

Bob Collins, try nitrile rubber gloves. They are more resistant to solvents and give you better protection than latex rubber gloves. They are blue in color, stiffer and twice as expensive as latex gloves. Consider getting a larger size than you are used to as they may be a bit harder to put on. The ones sold by Harbor Freight are OK, although a lot of their other stuff is pretty junky. Leland in Pleasanton
