I have been working on the cowling for several evenings.
I am almost of the opinion that the motor mount has some built-in
angle in it that causes the engine to look to the right a small
amount.
Does anybody know for sure??
The face of the cowl looks to be perpendicular to the fore/aft
centerline, but it still doesn't fit to the spinner back plate
consistently.

A few degrees of right thrust is normally built into the motor mounts
to help offset the left turning tendencies, i.e. torque, p-factor,
precession and slipstream. A call to Van's should confirm this of
course. You'll see it if you look closely at other installations.

Mine has a definite right offset to it as well, but it is not
noticable unless you look very close.

That's actually common. Lot's of aircraft have either the engine
offset to the right or the vertical fin offset a small amount to
cancel engine torque when the aircraft is in full power/nose high
situations as is typical during takeoff (I _think_ Cubs have offset
fins if I recall correctly).
Most builders of model airplanes automatically offset the engine to
the right at least a full degree.
I never thought to look at that on the RV but it makes goods sense if
so.
