I finished my panel last night. A photo is in my folder, it shows
the new Dynon AI.

OK, I gotta ask. How much did that cost? It's beautiful.

Thanks Bob. The panel cost me about $14,000 for equipment, I did the
wiring.

Thanks Darwin. The interesting stuff other than steam gauges are:
King KX125 Nav/Com, King KY97 com, King KMD150 GPS, Dynon AI,
Digitrak Autopilot, Microair transponder (2.25inch), PS Engineering
intercom PMA4000, Davtron Chronometer and MGL 4 channel temperature
display.

Now this brings up a concern of mine. I went to the RV workshop and I
learned about working with sheet metal and that's going OK and I feel
relatively confident.

But in the last few weeks, I've been watching Dan Checkoway doing
some plumbing for the engine and instruments, and I look at this
panel and all the wiring necessary and, well, ain't no way I've got
the expertise for this aspect of the project.

So this is for you guys and others who have finished their projects.
How did you gain this experience?

All this stuff is knowledge that's easily acquired over time, assuming you
know where to look.

First and foremost, go look at as many RVs as humanly possible. Bring a
camera if you can and take photos of everything, as insignificant as you
might think it is at the time. If you don't know what something is,
definitely take a picture. 8^)

*** For electrical and avionics:

Equipment -- In this case do the research and learn everything you can about
all the various avionics choices out there. GX-yadda-yadda, SL-foo-bar,
ACS-blah. All the manufacturers put some form of specs on their sites. Not
great, but it's a start. Ask around and see if you can play with various
stuff. Deciding what equipment to put in your plane is probably tougher
than everything else...except maybe for deciding where to put it all. 8^)

Techniques -- attend Bob Nuckoll's AeroElectric Connection workshop, get the
book (http://www.aeroelectric.com), and just read through it. I didn't
attend the workshop but chose just to read the book instead. I understand
general electrical principles and am familiar with the basics...but not
having gone to the workshop I think I missed out on some essential knowledge
that I had to pick up in other, less expedient ways.

Get some free catalogs from Digikey, Mouser, whatever. Those generally just
confuse me until I know what I'm looking for, but they help to see inset
photos and diagrams of various crap. Connectors, switches, yadda yadda.

Join the aeroelectric-list (hosted at http://www.matronics.com, just like
rv-list). Just follow along, search the archives
(http://www.matronics.com/searching), etc.

Check out Andy Karmy's excellent site:
http://www.karmy.com/rv9a/pictures/fuselage/electrical/ He took lots of
great pictures of his electrical system.

Dan Masys has been really busy getting his beautiful RV-7A finished, but he
has taken a lot of time to help me by answering my pestering email
questions. People like Dan & Andy who have gone through all of this
recently are excellent resources.

Consider having somebody wire your harness for you. I'm only advocating
this because the value is unbelievable. I had John Stark from Stark
Avionics (http://www.mindspring.com/~jts7/index.htm) pre-wire my avionics
(his prices were awesome, by the way). I just got 'em today and I'll have a
few photos on the site tonight. It's so freakin' easy this way. For a few
hundred bucks, my avionics stack is totally pre-wired and labelled. It's
not that I don't have the ability or confidence to do it, but jeez...for a
few hundred bucks I didn't have to worry about it, the tools, the supplies,
the connectors, etc. Just seemed like good bang for the buck...in the air
faster.

The Approach Systems setup looks excellent. In my case, I wanted more
flexibility than it would offer (i.e. GX60=Com1, SL30=Com2, which isn't
allowed with their box). That puppy looks like it will definitely save you
time if it meets your needs.

*** For engine/firewall forward/plumbing:

Again, look at other RVs, have a tech counselor come by, ask lots of
questions, see other builders' sites, etc. Use AC43.13, 21 Years of the
RVator, etc. Whenever in doubt, ask. Use Van's Firewall Forward
kit...takes the guesswork out of the big items, hoses, drawings, etc.

Firewall forward is where I have the least confidence at this point, so I
will definitely require assistance in the near future (once the engine is
hung).

Just ask lots of questions and study up on other RVs and you'll get it.
Take all of this with a grain of salt...I pretend to know what I'm doing but
I'm just learning as I go along.
