Home -> RV-7 and RV-7A topic: Wing kit!

Author: "Ron Walker" <ron@...> Time: Mon Jun 16, 2003 1:20 pm PDT Link

Well .. my wing kit just arrived (YEAH!) .... but ....

The wing spar box was crushed at one end. A quick cursory review of the
contents has revealed that some aileron/flap pieces and the *center spar*
are completely unusable ....

I called Van's and the shipping company (ABF) to start the process of making
this right. The next major step is getting the damage list to Van's so that
they can get me an "invoice" to file a claim against the shipper. With so
much $$$ in damage (Van's "off the cuff" estimate is about $1,400), the
shipper wants to send an inspector out. Not fun.

Anyone ever have a damaged center spar on shipping ? Moreover, how long it
would take to replace ? I'm sure there's other areas I can be working on ...
like the tanks, flaps etc ...

Talk about a happy then real sad day.

Ron

My kit is due next week and THIS is the thing I'm most concerned
about. I have some questions. Did you have to sign anything from the
shipper when you took possession? And did you point out the damage or
otherwise indicate on whatever needed to be signed that there was
damage. My fear is that I need to document it at the time the
shipper is there that I'm not taking possession of something and
certifying that it's OK.

Did Van's say who's going to pay for sending the stuff back?

Ok ... so far ....

I called Vans first. Gave them a high level overview of what I could *see*
without further opening the box. I accepted the shipment but noted ON THE
WAYBILL all damage that was visible. Van's then said to call the shipper
immediately and inform them of the damage. Since it looks like much $$$, the
shipper would probably want to send an appraiser out ... and they do.

Both parties said to go ahead and open the kit up and inventory everything
to get a list of items that need replacing. Do NOT throw *anything* away
(including packaging). I have a digital camera and will be photographing
everything that appears to be damaged. Once I have a damaged parts list,
Van's will put together an "invoice" that will be used to file the claim
with the shipper. This is all I know so far.

I'm *hoping* that Van's will go ahead ASAP and get started on my replacement
pieces but that is just my hope so far. I figure when I get the inventory
list complete tonight and send it to them via fax I'll start getting more
answers.

As far as $$ for shipping .... the driver did say that they (ABF) would ship
replacements on their nickle.

For what it's worth .. the shipper and Van's so far have been very agreeable
and really seem to want to get this resolved as quickly and painless as
possible.

Ron:

I had a damaged center bulkhead when my wings were shipped. I feel
your pain. My center section was $570...and that's just for the
forward most of the two bulkheads.

Also, be careful if you don't get a quote similar to this amount from
Vans. When I first called Vans to find out how much a new bulkhead
was going to cost, I was quoted $280...so, that's what I put on the
claim form for the shipper. Well, the $280 was just for the parts
that make up the bulkhead. There was an additional charge of $290 for
Philogisten(sp) to assemble the bulkhead.

But to make a short story long, it took almost 6 months for the
shipping company to reimburse me for the damage.

Hope this helps.

I recently took delivery of my fuselage kit & the crate came with no visible
damage. I signed for the delivery & put the crate in my shop. Upon opening it
later on I found several large parts damaged. It was obvious that it was
mishandled because the items had all shifted & impacted the same side of the
inside of the crate. I called ABF the next day & long story short they would only
pay 1/3. After a lot of aggrevation with ABF, they upped it to 1/2. Tom at
Van's said he would make good for the balance & credited my account. Van's always
goes out of their way to help you but do yourself a favor & open the crate &
check for damage before signing for it. (P.S. the replacement parts came in a
crate that looked like it was air dropped from 1,000', fortunately there was no
damage to the parts.)

All this makes me feel glad that Rich and I went out to Aurora to pick up our RV and reinforces our plans to go get the engine and prop next month. I had my fill of trucking companies when I built the SeaRey. Both the engine and kit crates suffered damage and loss.

Just a quick note to say that when we receive a
shipment (and can't inspect the whole thing) we should
make a note on the shiping form that we sign for the
shipper that we did NOT inspect it EVEN IF THERE WAS
NO VISIBLE DAMAGE. Do this even if it is a small
package and the driver is in a hurry.
