Author: "Hugh Tyler (SunGard-Chico)" <hugh@...> Time: Tue Jun 17, 2003 8:01 am PDT Link

My brother has volunteered to model some of my proposed paint schemes using
animation software. I am looking for some files (front view, top view, side
view, back view) of the RV-7 using DXF or LWD formats. Anyone know where I
might find something like this? Thanks.

Hugh,

You could go the the "files" by going to www.yahoogroups.com and sign in
with your user name
and password. Then go to the Rv7 and Rv7a group and click on "files". One of
the files is dedicated
to paint schemes and maybe you could work from there.

I've been a group member for quite some time and never knew about the
files page.

Thanks Simon... now if I can only get a .dwg application so I can
look at some of the drawings.

Rick,

Try this free viewer from AutoDesk:

http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/index/1,,2404513-123112,00.html

or another one from (Voloview) AutoDesk:

http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/index/1,,837403-123112,00.html

either one should work, but Voloview is more common.

I looked into visualizing a paint scheme a few months ago, too. However,
from the aspect of simulation rather than animation and on other aircraft as
well. Someone at Van's (sorry, I can't remember who) offered to host me
while we sat down and compiled all the geometry data. Well, I was just
hoping that they had something (not necessarily precise) readily available.

Since then, I've a ton of research into Microsoft Flight Sim and it's 3d
models. I found that they distribute FS 2002 Pro (FS 2004 Pro, soon) with a
free modelling tool called gmax (http://www.discreet.com/products/gmax/).
It's capable of placing a 3 view engineering drawing in the background for
constructing a 3d model off of. They have a P-38 building tutorial using
this technique. FS 2002 and FS 2004 have a new mdl file format (they finally
got it right - http://zone.msn.com/flightsim/FS02DevDeskSDK09.asp) which
Discreet has a plug-in that enables them to write this type of file.
Probably included in the version distributed with MSFS Pro. Regardless,
Microsoft has a conversion tool
(http://zone.msn.com/flightsim/FS02DevDeskSDK08.asp) that will convert a
gmax file to mdl. Be warned, I have not gone thru the whole process.

Hugh, if you're brother's adept at modelling I'm sure we'd all benefit from
a generic RV-7 3d model. Hint. Hint. ;) ;)
Then we'd just have to paint our own paint schemes and map them onto the
model using gmax, which is just like puttin' up wall paper. Then we could go
out and fly it in MSFS. Sorry, can't help with the aero modelling! :)

I also researched down into the FS '98 & FS 2000 arena trying to tap into
the vast number of models already out there. Under the hood, that's some
real nasty software engineering. (I still hold to my belief that MS Windows
was built by a buncha Junior High kids) The Pretty Polygon Editor (PPE)
(http://prettypoly.sourceforge.net/) is an open source editor that can read
these older mdl files (not the same as FS 2002 and FS 2004 mdl files) and
can write DXF files (among others), which gmax can import. Hence, there's a
number of RV-6 files out there (e.g., www.flightsim.com) that can be
converted and texture mapped for a close idea of an RV-7 paint scheme. I
believe any original texture files have to be converted as well if you wish
to retain them. PPE notes this in it's documentation. Haven't looked at
importing them in gmax. Another warning, I have not gone thru this whole
process either.

If you don't have or care to use MS Flight Sim, Flight Gear is an Open
Source flight sim (http://www.flightgear.org/) and can be used in
conjunction with PPE.

I remember a couple of years ago finding a guy who had a sonex FS
aircraft add-on. On the same site he had a RV-6 and RV-8. Just found the
link again, so if you are interested in using a RV-6 sim, here it is:

Look on the site – there’s plenty to see………

Here are some pics of the models that I have been working on for
some time. So far, only the 6 is modelled, but I plan on doing the
whole range. The models will be able to be viewed directly on your
computers, or be flown in MS Flight Sim 2002. The paint schemes are
able to be highly customised, as with the model as well. Some of the
options include 6/6A, Slider/Tipup, different light configurations,
steps, etc.

Some of the
options include 6/6A, Slider/Tipup, different light configurations,
steps, etc.

The pictures are gorgeous, Peter! But for some strange reason, I
could not access them by clicking on the link. I had to copy the
shortcut and enter it manually... something about forbidden remote
access...

Anyhow, I'm still looking forward to flying the Sim model. How's
that coming?
