I have got myself a strip of steel 4 inches wide to use as a back
rivetting plate.
What length did others use? What is the suggested optimum length for
a back rivetting plate?
Thanks

I guess whatever is the most convenient for you, depending on table space
and other considerations. I have a round one of about 18" diameter and a
square one of about 16 inches. They both work equally well. Basically I use
whatever I had available.

Doesn't really matter. The larger/longer the better, that way your chances
of slipping off or pounding a rivet not on top of the plate are less.

Jim,
The biggest plate you can find will be just fine. Anything to keep
you from running off the plate while you are riveting will be just
fine. I guess if you could cover the whole table that would ensure
you never made that mistake.

Longer is better so you can get as many rivets as possible without having to
shift your work piece so often, or worse, you start back riveting without
the plate under the rivet. Orient the plate in the same direction your rivet
lines will be in.

The piece I use the most (A Bit Lighter than my "BIG" Plate) is 8" wide by 48" Long 1/2" Thick Blanchard Ground and polished. Works Great...
Let just say that this one is about 1/16th the size/weight of the "Big" one...
In this cage bigger is better but don't overdue it...

I recommend a large long back rivet plate and here's why.
This is the bonehead move I made over the weekend.
My plate is 4"x6"
While riveting the stiffeners onto the rudder skin, I missed the
plate & kinked the stiffener & skin.
OK, no big deal as it was a slight kink & I could live with it.
I made one last attempt to remove the kink prior to setting the
trailing edge.
I setup the TE with the adhesive and clecoed the skin & aex onto the
angle iron. I let it set overnight. I proceeded to rivet the 1st row
of the TE and all was going well. I then flipped the rudder over to
insert & tape down the other rivets & heard a thud.
I RIVETED THE #$%^ BACK RIVET PLATE BETWEEN THE SKINS.
I felt like a surgeon leaving tools in a patient.
I had to drill out a few rivets & redo. All is well as I still have a
straight TE
