Here's the history of the pitot tube price increases, as I've been
told it. There are two players in this; Gretz Aero, and Aero Instruments.
Aero Instruments is the manufacturer of the pitot tubes, that lower,
L-shaped portion of the total assembly. The company was owned by an
old gentleman who retired about 18 months ago and sold the business to
a bigger corporation. They got greedy and doubled the gentleman's $150
price to around $300 at the beginning of 2002. They are now doubling
again, they're at $620 as of beginning of this year.
Gretz Aero consists of an independent guy in Littleton, CO who makes
the brackets for the Aero Instruments pitot tubes, the portion that's
riveted to your wing, and holds the L-shaped pitot tube. He has up
until now been re-selling the pitot tubes along with his brackets, but
has refused to do business with anyone so greedy that the feel they
can double the price (twice!!) and get away with it. He has sold off
his last tube. As soon as the other majors (Aircraft Spruce, etc.) run
out of the inventory they purchased at the old price, they'll be
forced to sell at these stratospheric prices also.
Can you say "Dynon Heated Pitot Tube"?
Personally, I'm on my RV-7A fuselage. My bottom wing skins are not
installed, I'm awaiting Dynon's heated Angle-of-attack pitot tube.

Latest: I received an email from Gillian at Dynon, she writes that
their AOA Pitot tube is planned for August release, and will fit a
Gretz bracket.

I was also told by Dynon the Gretz bracket AN5812 or PH502-12CR is
the one to buy.

SWEET! I just finished mounting my Gretz pitot mast. This makes the
Dynon unit even more attractive!
