Anyone know where I can purchase a paint mask with four-inch (4")
squares to paint a checkerboard pattern on an RV rudder?

Don, any vinyl graphics shop should be able to make a mask for you.
Tehy have a special removeable mask vinyl file that is made just for
this. Just stick it on.. paint and then remove.

I found one place before I posted the question. Does $90 seem like a
reasonable price for masks for both sides of an RV-7 rudder? Seemed
kinda high to me.

Don, the materials for the mask will run the sign shop about $10-15
bucks. Depending on the amount of time he spent drawing the artwork
that doens't seem to unreasonable of a price. I could do it since I
have a sign plotter. But I never have the free time to get the art
work done.
