Just started the subject topic and have a few questions after examining some
of the posted pictures (Dan C. ,etc.)
Can someone direct me to pictures of this install done on a QB wing? I'm
thinking of taking careful measurements and drilling thru bottom skin,
mounting plate and angle in one shot. Unfortunately the QB wing doesn't
allow one to back drill the bottom skin with the top skin off....
Just to confirm, which bay are people choosing? The same one as Van's
(located with aileron bracket)? or one outboard or inboard? Looks like
either way would clear the tiedown. If one bay outboard, where are you
placing the splice between the metal tubing in the mast (need a length of
metal tube before the plastic due to heat dissipation) and the plastic
tubing back to the panel?
Thanks in advance for the (usual) insights...
Regards,
Joe

I located it in the bay just outboard from the aileron bellcrank. It
doesn't appear that the plastic tubing in required when placed in
that bay. It would be required if you go out two bays. From the
inspection panel you can reach the pitot in the next bay outboard.
Just be sure to mount it next to the outboard rib in that bay, it
seems to have easier access.
For what they are worth here are my pics (not QB either), see about
half way down:

FWIW, if I had to do it in a QB wing I would just use an angle drill through
the nearest inspection hole to back-drill the skin through the mounting
bracket reinforcement plate.
Basically, with the bottom skin off, drill the plate to the spar and
adjacent rib, then cleco the bottom skin on. Reach in with the angle drill
and back-drill those skin holes. Then reach in with a sharpie and trace the
hole outline onto the skin. Disassemble, cut the hole, debur, dimple, close
up your wing. 8^)
Definitely easier with the top skin off (slow build), but not very difficult
on a QB either.
Hope this helps,

Use the bay just outside of the bellcrank. Hopefully you haven't put on the last skin yet. It just involves some planning and removing the skin a few times. The real challenge (okay minor challenge)is when putting on the last skin is working around the mount. Just kind of tedious. Looks great when done.

I put mine in the bay outboard of the aileron bellcrank. I put a bulkhead fitting on the rib between the aileronbell crank bay and the pitot tube bay. This way I have a short piece of curved tubing that goes from the bulkhead fitting to the pitot and should make installation and maintanence easy.
I have a QB and here (as best I can remember) is how I installed it. I first put the angle bracket on the rib by clamping a scrap piece of aluminum to simulate the skin. Then I put the plate in place with out the skin and drilled it through the spar. Next, I traced the plate and created a template to drill the holes through the skin and the plate. I put the wing skin on with the plate on (held by the clecos through the spar) layed my template on it and drilled. The final step was to disassemble it and cleco the plate to the skin and back drill the rest of the holes.
Hope that helps.

Thanks to all who replied - I just finished it up - about 3.5hrs total time.
The back drilling using the angle drill and an extension was the most
tedious part but it seems to have come out well. Now, I hope the Dynon pitot
fits the bracket. I spoke to Wayne Gretz several weeks ago and he also
confirmed that he was working with Dynon to have a compatible mount for
their pitot.

Joe
