A question for those of your that decided to go with a removable luggage
floor.
The plans call for the luggage floor to attach to the rear luggage bulkhead
with a series rivets and nut plates. Since I will not be using rivets to
attach the floor to the bulkhead, how many additional nutplates did you use
to attach this area? Pictures would be great if you have them. Thanks.
Hugh

I remember seeing an equation somewhere that said:
X bolts = Y solid rivets = Z blind rivets
It referred to shear and tensile fastening strength. Assuming the same
spacing, Y is always greater than X, and Z is always greater than Y. So my
assumption would be that using screws wouldn't require any different spacing
or increased density of fasteners. If anything you've got a more solid
bind.
Did I use screws? Nope, so take this opinion with a grain of salt! 8^)

I made my floor (cockpit and baggage) removable and I highly recommend this
mod.
However, the baggage floor adds a nice 'stiffness' to the luggage bulkhead.
To maintain this support
I cut the baggage floor panel. The aft 5 inches or so rivets to the floor
ribs and baggage bulkhead. The
rest (forward part) is screwed down. You maintain the access to the floor
and keep the rigidity of the bulkhead.

Hugh,
Sounds like you are at about the same point I am in construction. I called
Vans about a week or so ago with the same question, as it seems there are a
bunch of rivet holes
pre drilled. I proposed using the current nutplate locations (there for the
rear baggage wall) and adding one between each of these locations. There are
three holes (for rivets) between most of them, so I will locate a nutplate in
the center hole of these. I believe one or two areas have an even (2 or 4)
number of holes, so I will locate the nutplate midway. The guy at Vans said no
problem, that was a bunch more in that area than he has in his "six."
I don't think there will be any loss in strength, as I intend to run the
extra holes through the rear baggage wall and this will even better attach this as
a doubler. Just about ready to start installing these nutplates, the rest
are done for the floors in the ribs (whew, a bunch of nutplates)!
Just what I have gathered as far as info, as always do what YOU think is best
after gathering all the info you can!

Hugh,
I've screwed my floor down and it turned out great. Being able to remove it
for wiring, inspection, etc. should make the extra trouble worthwhile.
I put a nut plate on every rivet hole on horizontal hole for attachment to
ribs, spar caps flanges, etc.
I also put a nutplate on the aft side of the baggage bulkhead at every place
a blind rivet would have been installed there. The only difference here was
I used nutplates for countersunk screws since the corrugated bulkhead skin
has to over the screw heads latter.
I'm not at home so I can't take any photos now. If you really need them, let
me know and I'll take some tonight.
Good luck,
Jon Byrum
