Hi all,
I'm working on the firewall forward of my 7A with an IO360 A1A and
Looking for some advice. Has anyone replaced Van's induction horn
with a ram air system? I have ram air on my Mooney and gain almost
an inch of manifold pressure at 10K feet. Also, What oil cooler are
people using and are they mounting it on the baffling or on the
firewall? Thanks

Yes. Almost done with mine now...starting work on the cowl inlet. Expect a
LOT of extra work if you go this route. Custom airbox, etc.

http://www.rvproject.com has a buttload of photos and comments on how I'm
integrating not only the Airflow Performance FM-200 (instead of the Bendix)
but also AFP's alternate air duct and ram air system.

Put it this way...I would have been flying by now if I had JUST STAYED
STOCK. No regrets, though! I want it the way I want it and won't settle
for less.

One note...there was a post to this list on January 6 by Ray Jarvis. Look
it up in the archives. Johansen is selling (www.flymore.com.au) a ram air
kit that is way too expensive for my taste, and it wouldn't work with my
configuration. But it's something to look into nonetheless.

Before you do that, it would be useful to get a copy of the
instructions that come with Van's induction snorkel. In them, he
writes about how he first tried a straight through ram induction
system with the Bendix horizontal injection servo, and actually
experienced a drop in MP. The offset induction setup has two
advantages that are not readily apparent. The first is that the air
inlet is sitting inside the high pressure area of the cowl. The
second is that the induction scoop is designed to do the same trick
that the cowl ramps do -- decelerate the air and increase its pressure.

With Van's induction system on my 200hp IO-360 A1A I am consistently
getting manifold pressure indications of 23.7 at 8000 density altitude
at 75% power. There has been a lot of discussion on the SoCal RV list
recently about whether this is plausible for a normally aspirated
engine since ambient atmospheric pressure at 8000 ft density altitute
is 22.2, and whether it may represent ram air effect from Van's
induction design. The fuel flows I am logging do support the notion
that my engine is capable of exceeding 75% power levels up to a
density altitude of about 9100 feet. So Van's setup seems quite good.

With respect to oil coolers, I got the standard O-320/0-360 oil cooler
than Van includes in the FWF kit, and mounted it on the left rear
baffle as per the FWF plans. It became immediately apparent this was
not enough cooling for the oil in my newly-overhauled engine, as I
found it very easy to hit the 245 degree redline temp at the 75%
cruise power settings I needed to break in the piston rings. So I got
the larger Positech oil cooler that Van's advertises for the 200hp
RV-8 installation. Oil temps immediately dropped 20 degrees, and then
another 30 when I got the fairings on. So I would very much recommend
getting the larger cooler specified for the IO-360 RV-8. It fits fine
in the same location of the left rear baffle, though I beefed up the
baffle it is bolted to by going to .063 stock rather than Van's .032.

Van's part number is "EA OIL COOLER 4215"

Description is:
#4215 for IO-360 200 hp engines in RV-8/8A, or O-360 RVs in hot
climates. Cooling area 4.3" x 5.6". Mounting holes (in flanges) 5"
between centers. 4.1 lbs.

You can order it online and find it easily by searching Van's online
catalog for "Positech"
