Home -> RV-7 and RV-7A topic: Tip up frame channels

Author: "Jim Percy" <jimpercy@...> Time: Tue Feb 3, 2004 7:33 pm PST Link

Hi-

I haven't seen anything about this on the list, maybe it's too
obvious. For those building the tip-up canopy, are you fluting the f-
631 channels to straighten them? It seems like fluting would prevent
the inner and outer strips from sitting flush against the channel
flanges. If you just clamp them to a table (without fluting) for
drilling and riveting, are the strips able to hold things straight?

Thanks in advance-
Jim Percy

Jim,

You're right in that you can't flute 'em. It's really a juggling act
between getting the flanges perfectly square, clamping everything, and
compromise.

Jim

I forget the part numbers, but I wouldn't flute/distort the side
rails.

The rear half roll bar frame stiffens the canopy frame considerably.

As a note the forward frame part needs to fit real good before you
start working along the sides.

It has to be manhandled somewhat to get it to conform to the
airplane.

The doubler that reinforces the rear center frame joint doesn't need
to be predrilled until you are looking at the two frame halves and
the doubler all at the same time. The tooling holes in the frame
halves coincide with some of the rivet holes if you use Van's hole
pattern.

The best advice is to go to brother Dan's web site, www.rvproject.com and
review it extensively. He has already found all of the land mines in the
process. Especially, when to actually rivet something. My only deviation
from Dan's great advice is that I completed the canopy in total including
all Plexiglas and fiberglass fairing work. It is now safely stored, out of
sight because I was VERY tired of looking at it. But it is done, ready for
paint!!!!

Regarding the rails, this is a process of twisting, bending and tweaking
until perfect.
