I would appreciate guidance on the necessity for, and method of
producing, the lightening holes in the VS rear spar reinforcing
plate. They are not mentioned in the instructions, but they are
obviously included in the plans. If they are not removed does it
upset the weight and balance? What is the best way of producing these
holes (they look like 1 1/2" and 2" holes to scale) ?? Do I need to
use a "fly-cutter"? This requires a system to secure under a drill-
press. Is there any other way?

Thanks

there are thousands of RVs flying without lightening holes in the
VS. It was only relatively recently (well after the first RV7 kits
were delivered, that the lightening hole was made part of the
instructions).

Like many other things, it's up to you. If you want to cut 'em,
cut 'em (I'd recommend fly cutter). If you don't, don't.

Depending on how you see your plane developing -- aft weight an
issue? -- you choose.

We used a $8.00 hole saw from the local hardware store and put it in
the drill press. Aluminum cuts real easy. Just make sure you only
cut the plate and not the actual spar. I made that mistake and had
to get a replacement part.

I used hole saws with a little Boelube for all of them. It was quick,
easy, and cheap. I didn't have a drill press at the time, just used a
cordless Makita. I'd probably use the drill press now that I have one
but I think I'd still use the hole saws since they are so easy. I
just have the regular ones designed for cutting wood, no need to
spend more as far as I can tell.

Phil,
Either fly cutter or hole saw. Yes, you need to clamp asembly firmly to
drill press table. Best to practice on scrap if you have not done this
before. When set up it is a half hour job.
