Hi Group,
Can anybody out there tell me what are the best type of
screws and nuts to use for mounting the instruments to
the panel?
Thanks,

Use brass screws to hold down interference with magnetic compasses. Van's sell black ones that look nice with some installations. They also come with the nut rings Van's sells.

Chuck,
Use 6-32 throughout, your choice of head style and material - it's strictly a subjective
appearance thing - except brass or stainless ought to hold in the whiskey compass.
You can paint screw heads to match the panel. Many instruments have threads/nuts
imbedded, and the required screw length varies considerably depending on flange
thickness and any penetration limitations. You need to examine each instrument.
Don't even think of using grasshopper nuts. Where needed, which wasn't that often, I
simply presealed on 6-32 hex nuts onto the flange. There are generic nutplate
gizmos that are pricey for their utility IMHO. Get all your instruments first, examine,
then decide.
