I corresponded with a popular insurance company and got the
following reply to this query"

"Question:

I am considering the purchase of a homebuilt RV6 aircraft. FAR's
indicate owners of homebuilts can do their own maintenance other
than the annual condition inspection for which I would need an A&P
to perform (I would not have a repairman certificate for that).

Are there any maintenance restricitions I should be aware? Does
XXXXXXX have a policy against buyers of homebuilt aircraft (without
an A&P or repairman certificate license) doing repairs and
modifications?"

Here's the answer:

"XXXXXXX will require the aircraft to be current with its annual
inspection at the inception of each policy term.

There are no insurance implications if you perform maintenance as
allowed by an aircraft owner/pilot under the FAR's.

There are exclusions should you operate the aircraft if it has not
been certified for flight by the FAA. Therefore, if you make any
modifications that require recertification by the FAA, you will want
to ensure that the recertification process is complete before
operating the aircraft"

Clear as mud? If the buyer falls in the 20% group of owners that
carries insurance in a purchased homebuilt they would be well
advised to get a clarification as to what is and is not permitted.

What's not clear? All he told you was that he won't insure a
homebuilt that hasn't been certified. He would have told you the
same about a Cessna.

If you change the engine in a Cessna to a different type, you need an
STC. If you change the engine in an RV7 to a different type, you
have to get a new DAR signoff. Other than being a lot easier for the
RV7, I don't see any difference as far as insurace is concerned.

I carry full coverage on my new RV6A and it costs less than what I
was paying for full coverage on my 30 year old Cherokee -- and about
a quarter of what I used to pay to insure my two kids to drive.

<SNIP>What's not clear?<SNINP>

If you examine the question he/she did not really answer it. I'll
reposit it here again for careful examination.

"I am considering the purchase of a homebuilt RV6 aircraft. FAR's
indicate owners of homebuilts can do their own maintenance other than
the annual condition inspection for which I would need an A&P to
perform (I would not have a repairman certificate for that).

Are there any maintenance restricitions I should be aware? Does

modifications?"

Note I asked if I could do all three activities in two separate
questions. Those activities being maintenace, modifications, and
repairs.

Here's the answer:

"There are no insurance implications if you perform maintenance as
allowed by an aircraft owner/pilot under the FAR's".

Note thate there is no mention on the modifications or repairs part.
The maintenance bit sounds like part 43 to me, but part 43(b) says
homebuilt's need not apply.

For some that answer may be clear, but I would need further
clarification, preferably in black and white, before I start twisting
wrenches doing mods and repairs.
