Hi,
We are seriously considering using Anodising for some parts of the project.
A couple of question for those that have gone before:
a) Any down sides for anodising parts?
b) Is it OK to anodising completed assemblies?
For reference the sort of thing I thinking of is seat backs and (non
ferrous) push rods. The concept of being able to make and then send
completed sounds good and if the spar is anodised it can't have that many
down sides?
Any thoughts gratefully received.
Carl

Since anodizing is done in acid I doubt it would be a good idea for
assembled parts. Not to mention I'm not sure how the differn't
alloys such as the rivets will anodize. This is a concern since not
all alloys of aluminum can be anodized with good results. This
includes the 2000 series alloys which generally yields a yellowish
coating with poor protection qualities. (most of your RV is 2024
Alclad)
Also I'm not sure how the pure alclad on the surface of the majority
our parts will come out. But I assume it should be ok.
Yes the main spars are anodized, but those appear to be anodized
before final assembly.
Hope this helps.

Good advice. The alclad anodizes beautifully, as does 6061. You can
get a decent coating on bare 2024, but many anodizers stay away from it.
Make sure that you identify the alloy of all the individual parts, and
call and ask before you send it. Definitely don't send any assemblies,
or anything that has anything but aluminum in it.
