Painting is not for the 'weak' pocketbook!!!

When you get a quote from someone like Razor Edge to paint your bird
and he says $ 2500 or even $ 3000, take it.

I didn't paint my own to be cheep, I just wanted to.

For general information, I have spent a little over $ 2000 on finish
paint supplies at the local automotive body supply store.

paint, clear coat, reducers, tape, thinners, cleaner, etc.

The paint itself is about $260 per gallon, clear coat is $ 115.

Amounts: 2 gallons of main color, 1/2 gal of one of the stripe
colors, 1 gal of marhyde sandable primer, 1 gal of self-etch primer,
quart of the other stripe color, 2 gallon of clear coat

just some ramblings, may be of interest to readers.

I spent about $1300 on my paint supplies. Three gallons of white, One gallon of red, a gallon kit and a quart kit of epoxy primer, all the cleaners and reducers and all my supplies like rags and sandpaper. I use Polyfiber Aerothane which is very glossy without the need of a clearcoat. The paint is about $150 per gallon. I actually have an extra gallon of white I didn't need.

I've asked Doug Reeves how much that gorgeous paint job on "Flash"
cost. Part of me wants to know. Part of me knows I won't like the
answer. <g>

<SNIP>anyone else out there who has painted their own and can add
some info on this?<SNIP>

I painted a rag airplane with Superflite with great results. Some
say is automotive paint, who knows. But it held well for the 7 years
I owned the airplane (considering all the flexing that fabric
airplanes have).

My current bird is painted with a PPG urethane auto finish and used 2
quarts of self-etch primer, about 3 qts of green and less than 1
gallon of white. The finish is holding very well and is easy to
repair and blend the painted areas (don't ask how I know). Total
cost was around $650. I also bought the hobby air respirator and an
HVLP gun. That brought the cost of a DIY paint job to about $1100.

I painted a 65 Cobra replica kit car using BC/CC with spectacular
results but would not recommend it for an airplane. There's a lot
of work that needs to be done after the CC is applied (wet sanding
and polishing). IMHO, BC/CC has too many downsides for airplane
finishes.

First, CC is mostly material and little solvent so whatever the cans
weigh is what you will be adding in weight to the finished
airplane. Second, If repairs are needed the blending process
requires to reshoot CC all over the piece to ensure there are no
lines between the old and new. Third BC/CC is at least twice as
expensive to apply. Fourth, a ding caused by hangar rash and rocks
may cause the CC to chip leaving the BC exposed to the elements.

On the other hand, for the novice BC/CC is somewhat easy to apply (I
am a testament of that); however, mistakes are hard to correct when
compared to a urethane paint job which requires mostly paint blending
rather than reshooting of an entire piece.

My preference for the RV7 will be the same PPG urethane product I
used in my current airplane. I figure the RV7 will take about
30~40% more paint than my current airplane. That means 2.5 gallons
of paint and about 3 qts of primer. Two coats of paint will keep the
weight down and provide a beautiful glossy finish.

I have not started painting but have priced the primer, paint and supplies
using PPG Concept process at about $1300.
Jon Byrum - hope to be painting in April.
