Author: "Richard Suffoletto" <rsuffoletto@...> Time: Fri Feb 13, 2004 5:56 pm PST Link

I could not find anything in the archives on this subject.. What are
others doing to keep the drawings available and easy to find. I
bought some vertical storage boxes at an office supply store for
large drawings, wrote the drawing number on the outside so I could
see it when it is rolled up but I still find myself spending a lot
of time looking for the drawing I need. Just wondered if anybody had
a better solution.

Thanks

I've gone through a couple differ methods of storing plans since I've
moved and changed workshops numerous times. Here are a couple of
pictures of different methods.

Lots of other methods out there as well.

A couple of years ago my wife bought a 36" wide heat sealer and a
roll of shrink wrap for a craft project. She also had a lot of foam
core board used for various arts and craft projects, so I shrink
wrapped all my drawings to the foam core(one drawing on each side of
the foam core board). This works great as can I pull out the one or
two drawings I need, put them where I need them in the shop, and can
write notes on the shrinkwarp with out messing up the drawing. Could
also use cardboard or almost anything else cheap instead of foam
core, but the shrink wrap is nice.

I make a mural out of them by thumb tacking them to the walls. They are always right there and easy to find.

Richard,
I'm an architect so I have to deal with drawings all the time. My suggestion
would be to take 2 pieces of wood (1x2 or something about the size of a yard
stick) which are at least 2" longer each end than the drawings (about 28"
for 24" x 36" drawings). Use several clamps, like you get at the office
supply store, and sandwich the drawings between the two pieces of wood along
the left edge of the drawings. Make sure they are tight.

Install 2 hooks or nails on the wall or edge of your work table and hang the
drawings there by the stub ends of the wood until you need them. Keep the
drawings in order. Vans sometimes sends duplicate drawings and you can use
these as cover and back to help protect the other drawings.

Hope this helps,
Jon Byrum

I used a similar method with some 1/4-inch thick yard stick like material I
found in the molding section of my local Ace Hardware. The plans are
sandwiched between two pieces of wood along the left binding area. I was
able to find some screw binding posts at work (we used them for binding
reports) and drilled three holes through the yardstick and plan set
sandwich. I left the wood a little long on both ends should I decide to
hang them on a wall somewhere.

For secure storage when done with a set of plans, I suggest a roll tube.
You should be able to find them in an office supply store.
