For those of you that had QB wings with overzealous QB riveters that
put in the wrong rivets on the aileron gap fairings (where the
fairing rivets and ribs are) what did you do?
Specifically there are flush rivets (AN426) at the rib point where
they should have left them empty so I could put AN470 rivets when I
mount the gap fairing. They counter sunk the heads of course and so I
am wondering if others just dimpled the fairing and went ahead and
used AN426 instead of what is called for? It will look odd cause all
the others in that row are AN470.
Thanks for any feedback

Jon,
I called Van's about this issue and they told me:
1. For the AN426 rivets at the rib locations, abandon those holes and drill
new holes on either side of the rib for additional rivets.
2. For the incorrectly installed rivets at the outboard end of the fairing,
drill them out and then install the fairing.
I didn't have a problem using this approach. BTW, the flap brace has the
same issue and you can't drill out the offending rivets at the rib locations
anyway since the skins are on. Use technique as in 1. and build on. Note
that you need to csk the flap brace where it attaches to the skin in order
to have a flush surface to mount the flap hinge on when you get to that
point (don't make the mistake of dimpling the flap brace like I did the
first time!)

I called Van's and asked the same question. I was told to measure 1" horizontally on either side of those rivets and install two more.
That's what I did.... and moved on!

Joe,
Thanks for the info. I've spent the last day stewing over the same problem. The two rivets on either side sounds like a better solution than drilling out the AN426 rivets at the ribs. Thanks.

Joe and Jon,
I guess it depends on who you talk to at Vans. When I called about this
issue the response was leave the flush rivets in place and just skip those
ribs. Nothing about drilling new ones on either side.

Jon,
Same thing happened to me. I also called Van's and got a little
different response: They suggested drilling out the flush rivets at
the ribs and then dimpling the gap seal (both flap and ailerons for
me) at those points to fill the countersink and then using flush
rivets. That is what I am doing. It will be a little odd in having
flush rivets only at the rib intersection, but who (I mean, really,
who??) is going to notice!?

Well thanks to all those who have responded. I actually thought of
all these options last night and also considered just skipping that
rivet as it is not structural on the fairing anyway.
I decided to dimple the fairing though and drill out/replace the
existing rivet with another flush one. This will eliminate the odd
look of having an empty hole. I guess as a perfectionist these are
just some of the pitfalls I have to deal with if I want a QB! It is
not a big deal as has been mentioned... few people will notice anyway
(mainly me).
Thanks again.
