Hello Everyone-
Here's an easy one: What is the best rivet hand Squeezer?
Thanks,

A pneumatic one....just kidding. 8^)

But you gotta define "best." I assume ergonomics are your top priority, and
then interchangeability a close 2nd?

I haven't used it, but I hear Cleaveland's Main Squeeze is pretty nice. I
have Avery's hand squeezer, which sucks -- but gets the job done and is
relatively inexpensive, and the yokes are interchangeable with my pneumatic.
I also have a Tatco, which is much more ergonomic and high quality, but the
yokes are proprietary. I use all of 'em all the time.

Paul, I'm like Dan...........go with air:-)

For hand squeezers, it is going to be a personnal thing. I tried the Clev.
squeezer and the Avery squeezer at Sun and Fun, and the Avery fit my hand
better than the Clev. I went with Avery and have been satisfied. I only
use hand power when air power doesn't work:-)

Flip and coin but get one that you can inchange yokes.

BTW, I'll have my pheumatic and Avery at the hangar during the Flyin on the 28th. I also have two Van's starter kits for anyone to play with. I'm only 1.75 hours south of Cincy, if you willing to drive through sniper alley.

Paul,
Avoid the US TOOL squeezer. The yokes are interchangeble, but cost $60 each.
Also, I was having troulble squeezing the last four rivets toward the tapers
due to the yoke design. Tatko makes a small unit that will get in there.

Paul,

As already mentioned by Dan and Dana, it depends on your personal
preferences. I have both the Cleaveland Main squeeze and the Tatco.
They are nice units and each of them has their pros and cons. I use
them both along with my pneumatic squeezer regularly.

The Tatco is a high quality squeezer for a reasonable price. The
ergonomics are great and it has a relatively short handle travel to
set a rivet. This allows me to squeeze 3/32 rivets one handed while
I hold the parts with the other hand. 1/8" rivets may be started off
with one hand then two hands along with some grunt are required to
finish squeezing. As Dan mentioned the yokes will only fit the Tatco
and are a little more work to change. I only have a 3" yoke on mine
so changing yokes is not an issue.

The main squeeze is an extremely well made unit but very pricey. I
paid $90 MORE for mine with a thin nose yoke than my pneumatic
squeezer with a 2.5" yoke cost! The nice thing is the ease of
interchangeability of yokes with a pneumatic squeezer. Ergonomics
have some pluses and minuses. On the plus side, the handles are
comfortable and it is very light. Nevertheless, since the yokes are
so heavy the tool is very nose heavy. The handle forces to set
rivets are at least half than those of the Tatco. However there is
no such thing as free work, so the handle travel is about three times
as long as the Tatco. This rules out setting rivets with one hand.
That is unless you have GIANT hands! I find this a real down side
for me since I now need three hands at times to set some rivets. One
to hold the part, and two to squeeze!

If your not going to get a pneumatic squeezer, I would recommend the
Tatco. If you are, then get a hand squeezer that uses the pneumatic
yokes. As mentioned before the Avery is a very nice tool at a
reasonable price. Personally, if I was going to do it again I do not
think I would spend the money for the Main squeeze. Of course, that
is just my opinion; you have to make up your own mind based on what
you can learn from other builders.

Hope this helps!

I agree with the "a pneumatic one"...

In all seriousness, though, I purchased the Cleaveland Main Squeeze
and it works well. I bought it because the marketing suggested that
it had more mechanical advantage than the others and I have put my
wife to work with it (no complaints, so far). I really have nothing
to compare it to, so take that with a grain of salt.
The yokes do interchange with my pneumatic and that is certainly a
plus.

Give me a call if you want to critique/STS about constructing one of
these things.
