Home -> RV-7 and RV-7A topic: Plastic on Skins

Group,

I have just began my project. I understand that some builders have left the plastic film in place (NOT removing strips with a solder iron) on skins during fitting, drilling, etc. Are there negative consequences with this approach?

Mark, IMHO yes there is a down side to this. You can leave the plastic on to do the fitting and drilling, but it will have to be removed for the dimpling.

In the process, chips from drilling are trapped under the plastic and the whole thing becomes a mess. Where skins overlap and the bottom part has a plastic film, your fit will not be as good if you don't peal the film before fitting.

May as well remove the strips first.

There was also a very recent thread dealing with corrosion as a result from
leaving the blue film on. I believe Van's even recommends removing it ASAP.
I started off just trimming the rivet areas of the blue stuff, but then
realized I'm not going to leave the skin as polished AL, so no need to
protect it from every little scratch. I removed it all - elimintes a lot of
small isses.

Ron
